Bharti Airtel, India’s largest GSM mobile service operator with 136 million subscribers, announced the launch of 3G US Modem (Data Card) priced at Rs.3799 for its postpaid and prepaid customers across India.
However, before you jump with joy, let me make it clear Airtel has not launched 3G services and the above plug and play 3G Data Card can be used for wireless Internet access over Airtel 2G/2.75G GSM services across India.
The Airtel 3G Plug and Play device comes with 1 year replacement warranty. It enables customers to stay connected on-the-go. The device supports EDGE/GPRS as well as UMTS/HSDPA up to 3.6 Mbps speed and compatible with Windows 2000/Windows XP/Windows Vista/ MAC (OS).
Airtel Prepaid users can recharge with the Airtel data packs, whereas postpaid customers can avail the any data plans at monthly rental ranging from Rs.49 to Rs.999 plan.

And I am very curious about the 999 UL plan. Either they will cap out the speed at 100 kbps and mess up the connection with a crappy little fair usage policy of 15GB per month. I am thinking of the latter.
Just Relience EvDo’s crappy 10GB UNLIMITED FAIR USAGE 10GB plan! WTF! If there is 10GB limit, they can’t call it UL!

It seems there are lot of misunderstanding here! First this device will do GPRS/EDGE for now. But as soon as Airtel rolls out it 3G network i.e, WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA network by this year end, we can use the same device with a 3G activated SIM or a 3G UIM. Until then it’s gonna be crappy speed. Moreover Rs. 3800/- is costly when compared to BSNL, 2,600 for single band HSPDA (3.6 MBps)and 3,100 for tri band HSDPA (7.2 MBps). Hell even EvDo modems are cheaper!

as far as price concerned I agree with you..its totally flop show by airtel. Before launching this kind of device they need to study is similar kind of device launched or not. if yes then at what rate ? what is the response so far ? . .. perhaps they doesn’t seem serious regarding data card business. They only wana show up their existence there.

The tarrif of Airtel 2G data plans are ridiculous. Also the device is too costiy. Lagta hai company comma mein hai. Market ka koi khabar nahin hai. Ye 3G bhi launch karenge to apne manchahe daam par. In choosne wale companies ke plans aajkal ajeeb aa rahe hain.

Hmm, first of all the data card cost is very high.. But we can buy another airtel sim, recharge with 98,2 gb data free, and use it with this datacard,
The best option is buy one 3G datacard use any sims now, and once 3g is available use it with this,
I am using Micromax MMX 300G datacard with docomo, aircel ,idea and airtel..

Data card cost is to high. Better Go 4r Idea or Vodafone. U can unlock Idea or Vodafone data card easily.

if we buy this we have to live on 144kpbs speed till november/december. till then no 3g service in India. Btw vodafone has unlimited offer with 7499/year + free 3g usb stick. but not to trust any till they roll out the 3g service.
am sure airtel/vodafone will have a good service(better than tata or reliance or mts) once they launch it full-fledged.
