WhatsApp Makes its Way to Reliance JioPhone Along With YouTube

At the 41st Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), the company announced a lot of achievements of Reliance Jio in the last one year. The company has announced that WhatsApp will be making its way to the JioPhone, which is the company’s feature phone. Alongside WhatsApp, Jio also confirmed that YouTube and Facebook would also be made available in the JioPhone app store. It’s been a while we have been hearing rumours about WhatsApp working on a version of KaiOS, and it has now been confirmed by Reliance Jio. Last year, Google announced the rollout of Google Assistant to the platform and it has been loved by the JioPhone users. WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube will be available for the users to download from the app store from August 15.

The JioPhone runs on KaiOS and it’s the reason behind the popularity of KaiOS in recent times. Even Google has recently invested $22 million in KaiOS, seeing the growth of the operating system in the last one year. And the entire credit goes to JioPhone itself.

Moving onto other details, Reliance Jio also announced that it sold over 25 million units of JioPhone so far and also announced an upgraded variant, dubbed JioPhone 2. Jio will be selling both the variants going forward.

Furthermore, Jio stated that the voice command is one of the best features of JioPhone. Users have issued over 20 crore voice commands on a monthly basis.

Reliance Jio is selling the JioPhone at free of cost, but a user has to pay Rs 1,500 while picking up the device. The Rs 1,500 amount will be refunded back to the customers after three years and they’ve to return the device as well. For the unaware, the JioPhone is a feature phone with 4G VoLTE support and Jio is calling it as ‘Smartest Feature Phone.’

Great news for people who like feature phones for their simplicity and long battery life. KaiOS running WhatsApp implies we will see WhatsApp on Nokia 8110 4G and all other KaiOS devices!!

The inclusion of WhatsApp on the Jio phone coupled with the exchange offer of old 2G handsets for new Jio phone for Rs.501 will ensure that 2G userbase of incumbent operators migrates to Jio, causing further financial stress to them.

They need to match the tariffs or provide extra benefits than Jio at 98.

Lol they need to match the tariffs at 49 as that’s what you get for a gig and unlimited calling per day. Really good plan. AVoId will have a hard time getting users back on 2g xD

In the AGM Ambani is telling that only 20% capacity is being utilised in Jio network… What does this means? Then why most of the Jio users are facing poor speeds??

July 5, 2018 2:32 pm 2:32 PM

That’s the stupidest thing I heard from Jio.., Most of their nodes are so much congested..! Instead of focusing on 4G+ they still see that as Non-Issue..

He probably means backhaul capacity. Low speeds are due to inadequate towers and spectrum.

July 5, 2018 2:53 pm 2:53 PM

or i can say

Cummulative capacity. low speed problem is still becuase of lack of adequate infa.

secondly cogestion at many selected tower is also varying from 0-100%, cogestion means excess capacity.

thus i fully agree with MDA for 20% and customer facing no/low speed issue.

because congestion is at the tower side, and not at the ofc side. Jio is using 2×2 MIMO, 64QAM for download and 16QAM for uploads. This coupled with a crapload of users on the network has just the network choked. They need to connect every tower with OFC and increase capacity of the network by using 4×4 MIMO or 8×8 MIMO for bands 3 and 5 along with 64×64 MIMO for band 40. Everyone will be able to make full use of the network, and the 20% capacity will bump to 80% capacity, and he can double plans like giving… Read more »

Capacity expansion will take at least one more year.

he can double plans like giving 4GB per day for 149 for 28 days.

Are you sure?

Well, yes. Once 4×4 MIMO on band 3 and 5 along with 64×64 MIMO on band 40, there will be ample data that people won’t congest the network even if there are 15k people in a small area like a railway station like Andheri or a metro like Rajiv Chowk.
