Verizon Activates New FWA Lines in Portland Region

Verizon Business said it has activated more than 740 new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) lines with the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), a transit agency providing bus, light rail, commuter rail, and paratransit service in the Portland metro region. This deployment will enable passengers to pay fares using their mobile wallets or contactless payment cards while also providing connectivity and information to transit operators, Verizon said in a recent announcement.

Improving Passenger Convenience

In partnership with regional traffic agencies, TriMet is using mobile data to introduce cloud-based Transit Signal Priority. This approach improves traffic flow efficiency, allowing buses to move more quickly without causing delays for drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians while improving safety and reducing carbon emissions.

Future Plans for Enhanced System

TriMet's future plans include using this enhanced connectivity to further improve system performance and security. The activation of the new FWA lines builds on an existing partnership between Verizon Business and TriMet, according to the official release.

Verizon Business is the exclusive critical connectivity provider for the Portland-area agency that provides multimodal transit service across a 533-square-mile service district.
