Telenor, partners withdraw payments bank plans

Telenor Financial Services, IDFC Bank and Dilip Shanghvi have withdrawn their plan to form a payments bank venture in India, according to an official statement. The development could be an indication about Norway-based Telenor's future plans for the Indian market. Telenor withdraws balance transfer services in all circles

In a recent move, Telenor's Indian unit Telenor India, has stopped offering balance transfer facility to their customer base. The move is quite unexpected as other telecom operators including Vodafone and Airtel are offering same services to their prepaid users in all the circles. Telenor upgrades its network sites in six operating circles

As a part of its network modernization program, Telenor India has announced the modernization of 10,000 network sites in all its six operating circles. Under the modernization program, Telenor India targets to swap its entire 25000 sites with state-of-the-art equipment to deliver high speed internet and enhanced voice experience to its customers in the circle. Telenor launches ultra affordable 4G service in Visakhapatnam, starts offering 1GB at Rs 149

After launching 4G service in Varanasi, Telenor India has now added Visakhapatnam - Andhra Pradesh as its second city for 4G services. The 4G service is being deployed over narrow-band LTE network operating on 1800 MHz spectrum. Telenor India posts huge operating loss, seeks spectrum at reasonable rates to continue operations

Telenor India has posted huge operating loss at NOK 3100 million in the first quarter, due to NOK 2.9 billion in impairment and write-down, the company said, and threatened to exit the Indian market if it fails to get spectrum at reasonable rates. Telenor said that its women employee base has increased more than 100% across functions like network operations, product development, sales and distribution and social media. The telco now has over 11% female employees, against industry average is pegged at less than 3%. The company has also focused on hiring differently-abled people.
