On an interesting note, the officials at BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) assured the members of parliament (MPs) that the services of state-run telecom operator will improve in six months. As per the officials, the work is ongoing and the target of 1 lakh towers will be achieved in the next six months. This is in contrast to what the telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said, which is that BSNL is likely to achieve the target of 1 lakh sites by mid-2025.

According to a PTI report, the MPs expressed concern over the poor quality of services offered by BSNL. The ministers cited their own examples of getting poor services as they have been using BSNL SIM cards. So far, BSNL has deployed more than 35000 towers in India. The target of 1 lakh sites is the milestone the company needs to achieve to offer a broad 4G coverage in the country. The telecom operator will also look to deploy 5G in the coming year on top of its 4G network.
BSNL officials also told the parliamentary committee that around 54000 towers are now ready to be installed with 4G tech and more sites are getting ready for deployment. BSNL is sourcing the core equipment from the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) while the RAN (radio access network) equipment is coming from Tejas Networks. TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) is playing the role of systems integrator here.

The state-run telecom operator has been losing market share rapidly to private competitors. This is because of a lack of high-speed networks. With the arrival of 4G, things can potentially change for BSNL. 4G is not going anywhere from India as the use cases for 5G are still not available and the customers would essentially pay anything extra for it.
