India's leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel inaugurated its Center for Shared Services for Taxation at a ceremony held today. Shri. V Sridhar, Chairman CBEC, inaugurated the Centre in the presence of senior officials from the Company and the Service Tax department. Mr. Sridhar congratulated the Company for this initiative.
Mr. Manoj Kohli, CEO & Jt. Managing Director, Bharti Airtel said " The Shared Services initiative is part of an overall transformation programme undertaken by us to improve the efficiency, speed and quality of service. The Shared Services will deliver all taxation compliances, and also prepare the Company for the new GST regime which is expected in 2010. We are proud of our tax compliance record, specially with our large scale and wide spread operations. With this launch, we will be able to scale up our operations to more than 200 million customers whilst sustaining our compliance track record. We are thankful to the Chairman, CBEC, and the Commissioner, Service Tax for their whole hearted support to our Shared Services".
Bharti Airtel is amongst the largest service tax assessees in the country. Airtel’s contribution to the exchequer on account of service tax was Rs. 4108 crores during the year 2008-09.
The Centre for Shared Services which operates under the "Airtel Activ" umbrella is a centre of excellence where multi- functional processes such as HR, Supply Chain, Finance and Tax would be undertaken for the entire company.
