PM Modi-led government announced the launch of the Bharat 6G Alliance in August 2023. There are seven working groups inside the alliance that are each working towards developing 6G for India and the globe. Much recently, the Bharat 6G Alliance met with the union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and telecom secretary Dr Neeraj Mittal. In the meeting, the alliance presented a series of in-depth action plans for 6G technology. The minister and the secretary showcased presentations from the chairpersons of each alliance's working group.




"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi Ji, India has transformed from a slow technology adopter to a leader. I am certain that all members of the Bharat 6G Alliance will work together to enable India to develop a ubiquitous, affordable and accessible technology for 140 crore Indians," Scindia said.

For the unaware, the seven working groups are device technologies, spectrum, use cases, standards, green and sustainability, RAN and core networks, AI and sensing, and security. With these presentations, the alliance showcased India's advancements in areas such as RAN technology, innovative applications across sectors like smart cities, health, agriculture; and intelligent networks for rural connectivity.

The government wants India to take a lead in 6G technology development. For that, India has also signed several MoUs (memorandum of understanding) with other countries to boost research and development in the area.

"The government is keen on ensuring that India plays a pivotal role in the global 6G landscape by developing world-class technologies, testbeds, and partnerships. We are confident that with this collaborative approach, India can emerge as a leading player in 6G," added Scindia.

With 6G, many new use cases of technology and networks will be possible for the first time. Multiple reports suggest that 6G's first commercial deployment is expected to happen in 2029-2030.
