Ericsson and MTN Bring Solar-Powered Connectivity to Remote Areas in Benin

Ericsson and MTN have joined forces to provide affordable and reliable mobile broadband services to remote rural areas in Benin that currently have limited or no connectivity. According to the official release, this strategic collaboration between the two companies seeks to bridge the digital divide by utilizing sustainable energy sources and innovative technologies to bring connectivity to underserved regions.

Deployment of Ericsson’s Radio System Portfolio

Under the agreement, Ericsson will support MTN Benin’s rural coverage initiative across 29 sites, including tower deployment and management. Ericsson will deploy its Radio System portfolio to ensure energy efficiency, including the energy-efficient three-sector dual-band Radio 6626 and compact microwave radio Mini-Link products as well as Enclosure 6140 containing, among others, lithium-ion batteries and Solarshelf.

Sustainable Connectivity with Solar and Battery Power

Ericsson says all sites will operate sustainably on 100 percent solar and battery power, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring a reliable and environmentally friendly connectivity solution.

Managed Services for Optimal Operations

In addition to the deployment of technology, Ericsson will provide Managed Services, offering comprehensive support and maintenance for the tower sites. This holistic approach aims to optimize the total cost of ownership (TCO) for MTN Benin, delivering significant benefits and efficient operations.
