11-digit-moibile-number-soonGuys if you think it’s tough to remember 10 digit mobile numbers then get ready for this coming next year you may have to update all your mobile phone numbers, & phone directories.

Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has proposed new 11 digit mobile numbering system from January 2010.

Experts believe that from 2010,  "9" will be prefixed to all existing mobile numbers be it CDMA or GSM while existing fixed line mobile number will remain the same. The TEC (Telecom Engineering Centre, DoT's technical arm) has recommended the new numbering plan that has been forwarded to the government for the final decision. The telecom department had come up with a 30-year numbering plan in 2003 but the fast growth in the telecom subscriber base has forced the authority to relook into its policy and consider 11-digit numbering system.

However operators quoted the new numbering plan is not going to bring down the network to a halt like what has happened with some foreign operators, despite the change will be in the software side only for existing operators.

Though operators want implementation of 11 digit numbering plan as soon as possible it seems operators are running out of combination of numbers.
