Motorola Revamps its Camera Application Ahead of Moto G6 Lineup Launch

The Moto G6 series is expected to launch later this month on April 19. Ahead of the launch, Lenovo-owned Motorola has revamped its camera app. The update is out just in time for the release of Moto G6 lineup but will also roll out for existing Moto devices. The company started rolling out the “new 2018 Camera User Interface” as it refers to it on the release notes on PlayStore. The update will bring the camera app with a redesigned user interface that is centred around making switching modes easier. Our Moto Z2 Force units have received the update already, while the Moto X4 running Android 8.0 Oreo is yet to receive an update.

The first change is the camera app icon, which now matches the look of new icon theme that will debut on the upcoming Moto G6 devices. In place of the older hexagonal icon, Moto has now opted for a more ‘standard icon against a plain dark blue background’. Hopefully, the older Moto devices will be updated to bring new icon theme.

The Moto Camera app UI has been given a modern look and now inside the app, there are three sections to choose from - photo, video and mode. While the default is the Photo app, swiping to the right gives quick access to video, and a swiping to the left opens up the modes screen.

The mode screen comes with options for panoramas, slow-motion video, and camera settings. The camera Settings screen has been changed to have 100% opacity and isn't a transparent layer over the viewfinder anymore.

At the top of the viewfinder, there are options to select between HDR mode, flash, timer, and a toggle to switch between Auto and Manual modes. The top app bar is also now more transparent so that users can see more of the viewfinder.

Switching to Manual mode essentially presents additional options on the right to tweak different settings, similar to that in the older version. For Moto smartphones with dual rear cameras, there will be a prominent button near the top to switch between the two.

Motorola has just begun rolling this update. This is a phased rollout meaning the camera app will be updated over the course of next few days. While Moto is launching the update to older devices, some very old devices may miss out the update.
