The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro created a lot of hype with its entry last year for being the first ever consumer Google Tango phone. Unfortunately, those who bought the device are in for some bad news. Lenovo has announced that it has no plans to roll out the Android Nougat 7.0 update to Phab 2 Pro or any other Phab devices.
Lenovo is not quite popular when it comes to Android updates and its effect was seen when Motorola went from quick updates under Google’s ownership to mostly rare updates under Lenovo. The Phab lineup devices which will not receive further software updates include Phab 2 Plus, Phab 2, Phab Plus, and Phab. Currently, the Phab and the Phab Plus are running on the Android 5.0 while the Phab 2 Pro, Phab 2 Plus, and Phab 2 are running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
It is always disappointing when a device won’t be getting any more latest OS update, especially since the Phab 2 Pro was launched just last year. The Phab 2 Pro was a high-end device as it was the first consumer smartphone that came with the Google Tango AR support and was priced at Rs. 29,990 at the time of launch.
When it comes to the specs of the device, the Phab 2 Pro houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor under the hood, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The phablet sports a 6.2-inch 1440 pixels IPS display and runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1. This dual-SIM device weighs in at 259 grams and is backed by a 4050mAh battery. The Phab 2 features a 16MP rear camera along with an 8MP front-facing camera, with Tango motion detectors and position sensors.
Looks like the Phab 2 Pro users are stuck with using the older software version. In addition to the aforementioned devices, the company also mentioned that the Tab3 7 Essential will stay on Android Lollipop 5.0 and the Tab3 10 Business will stay on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Both the tablets were launched last year.
This move might essentially be bad for Lenovo, going forward, since all other smartphone manufacturers make it a point to release regular software updates to its users and keep up with the latest Android version.
