As we recently shared Google's RailWire, the free Wi-Fi service by RailTel, which was launched recently at the Mumbai Central station, the first out of 100 stations to get the superfast wi-fi network this year. We decided to visit the station and test the network by ourselves. We thought that it would be helpful for our readers to know the performance of free Internet offered by Google and RailTel.
As I entered the station, I noticed the banner indicating the availability of free Wi-Fi at the station as visible in the pic above. I scanned for available Wi-Fi networks on my smartphone and found RailWire Wi-Fi network with a good signal strength. On selecting the network, it connected promptly and showed the status as connected.
It then redirected me to the Sign-In page. The Sign-In page asked me to enter my mobile number in order receive an OTP, which I received promptly. Upon entering the OTP, I was instantly connected to the Wi-Fi network.
After getting connected, I conducted an Internet speed test using the ever reliable and trusted 'Speedtest by Ookla' app. The results showed a low ping of just 61 ms, but the download speed was strangely half of that of the upload speed. It could be due to multiple users accessing the network majorly for downloading purpose, but the speeds were still pretty impressive for a public Wi-Fi network as visible in the screenshot above. As of now, RailWire public Wi-Fi is completely free to use and does not have a chargeable model.
