According to Financial Times, Apple and Samsung are in discussion with mobile carriers to develop standards for e-SIM cards, which would provide the customers the ability to switch carriers without getting a new SIM card. As the SIM would remain integrated into the phone, the switching could be done through an interface on the device.

Apple is not new on this, as it has already introduced LTE iPads that include Apple SIM which gave people the choice between multiple carriers. The mobile operators are in favor of this new shift to e-SIM, said the report. However, this is doubtful as it makes it easy for the customers to discard a service provider.

The standardization would come only towards 2016. And, if arrived, it may make the manufacturers make the devices thinner.
