Telenor’s Indian subsidiary Telewings Communications are planning to bid for spectrum in Mumbai telecom circle in the upcoming auction in March and will continue to provide services in the metro in line with the license extension announced by the Supreme Court.

Telenor

The Indian subsidiary, which currently operates under Uninor brand name, is shutting down operations in Kolkata and West Bengal zones as planned earlier. Though there might be auction for 900MHz spectrum in Kolkata and West Bengal in March, 2013 Telenor seems not to be interested in these two circles where Uninor is quite popular.

”Considering there will be a second spectrum auction in Mumbai and Telenor Group has stated that it may decide to participate in these auctions,” the company said in a statement.

In the six circles of Uttar Pradesh (East), Uttar Pradesh (West), Bihar and Jharkhand, AP, Maharashtra and Gujarat, Telenor Group has already secured a 20-year license and Uninor services will continue uninterrupted. On Monday, the Supreme Court extended the deadline to February 4 for existing operators of 2G spectrum to continue operations from the earlier January 18.

"In the Kolkata and West Bengal circles where no additional 1800 Mhz spectrum auction is expected, services will continue to be scaled down as announced," it said.
