Entel Chile to Phase Out 2G for 4G, 5G Expansion From H2 2024

Entel Chile has announced its decision to focus on deploying 4G and 5G technologies, marking the gradual shutdown of its 2G network. In its official release, Entel said the transition is set to commence in the second half of 2024, aligning with the global trends and driving more efficient spectrum utilization, improved customer experiences, and a leap towards inclusive and environmentally sustainable digitization.

Transition to Advanced Technologies

With a phased approach, the gradual shutdown of the 2G network will initially be implemented in regions with fewer users relying on 2G. To ensure a smooth transition, Entel said it has developed specific support measures targeting vulnerable users who may experience potential disruptions.

Gradual Shutdown of 2G Network

Starting in August of this year, Entel Chile will cease marketing new services on the 2G network, redirecting its focus and resources towards the expansion of 4G and 5G networks. While most of the 2G network will be phased out, approximately 100 locations across Chile will retain the technology until a 4G or 5G network becomes available as a suitable replacement.

Entel said the shift towards infrastructure development with 4G and 5G technologies is a response to the increasing demand for data-intensive services in an interconnected world. The decision made by Entel is in line with the progress of the industry, allowing the company to better meet the changing needs of its customers.

Chile's 2035 Digital Strategy

Entel emphasized the role of technological infrastructure in Chile's 2035 Digital Strategy and the country's commitment to achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The company reassured customers that the process would be planned and gradually implemented to minimize connectivity issues.

Sustainability

Beyond the operational advantages, Entel said the initiative offers significant environmental benefits. Older technologies, such as 2G, are less energy-efficient compared to advanced networks. Entel Chile also plans to promote a special collection plan for old 2G cell phones, part of the company's recycling programs.
