TRAI has just released data related to activation, deactivation and complaints of Value Added Services w.e.f. 1st January 2014 to 30th September 2014. The regulatory authority has been taking steps regularly to prohibit activation of value added services without the consent of consumers. Directions prohibiting the same and procedure regarding obtaining consent from consumers have been issued as well.

TRAI

Customers can deactivate the Value Added Services through a common toll-free number (155223) accessible through SMS or call across all operators. If any value added service is activated without the consent of a consumer, they may request the service provider for deactivation of such service on toll free Number 155223.

For the 9 month period ending September 2014, the cumulative VAS activations was 568,805,693 and the number of deactivations was 93,593,963. Out of the total activations, 0.18 percent (10,238,502) were complaints from customers regarding activation of VAS without their knowledge. VAS activation without knowledge is one of the most annoying things a customer has to go through and TRAI is working constantly on reducing it.

Lastly, activation of VAS is continuously monitored by TRAI. The telecom regulator did not share the names of operators against whom the complaints have been received. On the other hand, the number of people wishing to opt in for a slew of VAS is on the rise as well.
