FOR PEOPLE WHO FEEL UNINOR HAS CHEATED THE GOVT

Norway-based Telenor, which is partnering real estate firm Unitech for the Indian telecom venture Uninor, has reiterated that investigation into the 2G spectrum allocation issue relates to a period before the telecom firm came to India.

The enforcement directorate is reportedly inquiring into details of foreign telcom companies that acquired stake in new entities who were granted licences in 2007-08.

In an interaction with the media on Friday, Telenor president and CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas said, “Telenor has not been contacted by investigating agencies.” He added that if the company is contacted by these agencies, it would cooperate.

Baksaas, however, added that Telenor entered India only in 2009. Baksaas said Telenor did not have information on the developments regarding 2G allocation in 2008, except for the investigation that the company conducted on its own before striking a deal with Unitech.

According to Baksaas, who’s here to attend the World Economic Forum summit starting in New Delhi on Sunday, both authorities and market recognise that “we have a long-term ambition in India”.
Speaking on 3G services, for which Uninor did not bid in India, Baksaas said the company was now focused on basic offerings. Only when the brand is established in the country, would it look at going into 3G, he said.

When asked on consolidation in the telecom industry, Baksaas said, “I don’t think it’s round the corner in India.” Once the subscriber penetration level rises to 70 to 80%, perhaps consolidation could begin. In another two years or so, one may see the first signs of telecom consolidation in India, he estimated.

On whether Telenor would look at buying another telecom player in India, Baksaas said, “as long as the framework of consolidation is not known, I cannot comment on the issue.” But he did not rule out such a possibility in the future.

    Benny :
Every Indian should boycott Uninor and Etisalat which got spectrum at throw away prices and sold it foreign players for many times the price they paid. A Raja wouldnot have done it without getting crores and crores of money bribe from these operators.

But now uninor is currently owned by Telenor (67.6%) & yest in financial times telenor CEO has quoted tat telenor is completely unaware of the scam as it had stake during spectrum allocation process. But unitech ppl the major cheators got the spectrum at very very low price & sold it to telenor for almost 10times more. So telenor should throw away Unitech by acquiring more stake & give some share to indian player in order to follow FDI regulations
