Vodafone India, the country’s second largest operator has now launched another pocket-friendly unlimited data pack at Rs. 5, which will offer the customers unlimited data for an hour. The pack is available for subscribers throughout the country and the speed would be that of 2G data.
Airtel has also been offering similar packs to their prepaid customer base since May. Recently, Airtel introduced ‘Cyber Café paper vouchers’ to attract more users after getting huge demands for its Cyber Café pack, especially in rural and 2G-only areas. Similar to Airtel, Vodafone has priced the data pack same at Rs. 5, which can be activated by dialing USSD codes *444*555# or *444*5#. Telecom Talk has already checked the availability of the pack in Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata. A Vodafone executive confirmed that the pack is active in all circles through USSD code. Initially, the subscribers would not be able to get paper top-up cards to recharge the pack.
During the financial year 2016, Vodafone registered 45.2% of growth in data revenues from Rs. 5,690 crore to Rs. 8,263 crore than the previous year. In order to boost its revenue, Vodafone is mainly targeting the first-time data users and the rural users. As most of the rural areas in India is still deprived of 3G, this unlimited internet for an hour at Rs. 5 will enable those users to explore internet without worrying about data limits. This may also help the company to position itself as a customer-friendly. However, the slow speeds on 2G network can be a major hindrance.
