We have previously reported how there has been spotting of a mysterious 3G network in various parts of Delhi NCR circle bearing the MCC MNC 404 999. At that point we were tempted to believe that it was the test signal being used by Idea cellular to later launch 3G on 900MHz band in Delhi, but Idea confirmed that the signal did not belong to them. We were also informed by many of our readers that the network has been spotted as early as mid-2013, but it still remains unclear as to whom the signal belongs to.
In the past few days, we have been getting reporting of the spotting of this signal in various circles like Kolkata, Karnataka (Bangalore) and Gujarat (Ahmedabad and Vadodara). The network appears when a manual scan for available networks is performed in WCDMA enabled mode. The screenshot shared above is from Kolkata circle, notice that it shows Airtel 3G network, Airtel does not have 2100MHz spectrum in Kolkata and is deploying 3G on 900MHz band here. Along with the 5 operators Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance, Aircel and BSNL the 6th mystery 3G network with MCC MNC 404 999 is also spotted here. The official list of MCC MNC codes for India has no mention of this code anywhere thus its identity remains shrouded in ambiguity.
