The OnePlus 6 is set to launch in the upcoming months as confirmed by OnePlus CEO Pete Lau back in January. The co-founder also confirmed the device would be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. Other than that little is known about the phone, but first images of the smartphone leaked recently confirming some of the key features of the OnePlus 6. Going by those images, the OnePlus 6 is said to arrive with a glass back, and the company may be looking to add wireless charging feature. Here's everything you can expect from the OnePlus 6 smartphone.
Design
As per the leaked images, OnePlus is preparing a major paradigm shift and will forgo the predominantly metal design that it has used for past few years. While the OnePlus 3, 3T, OnePlus 5 and 5T all sported all-metal design, OnePlus seems to be going with a curved glass back and metal frame design for OnePlus 6. This is clearly a step forward as other major flagships including the Samsung Galaxy S series, Apple iPhones all feature glass sandwich design.
As expected from a 2018 flagship, the OnePlus 6 is also going with a bezel-less design. OnePlus has designed the smartphone to have the same all-screen design as Apple’s latest iPhone X. The edge-to-edge displays stretches across the entire front, only to be broken by a small top notch that houses the selfie camera and the earpiece.
The notch has lately become a fad with other phones like Asus ZenFone 5Z and ZenFone 5 adopting it. However, several OnePlus fans were outraged with the design and complained to the company. Whether or not OnePlus changes the notch, the OnePlus 6 will surely offer a higher screen-to-body ratio than its predecessor, the OnePlus 5T.
Further down the line, the leaked OnePlus 6 features a slightly-protruding dual camera combo which is now aligned vertically and placed in the center of the rear panel. There’s also a concave fingerprint sensor centred that sits right below the camera module and well-separated from the surrounding glass.
Sadly, this means the OnePlus 6 won’t be employing the in-display fingerprint technology. The technology is still new, so it figures that OnePlus wouldn't like to risk losing its customer base.
Advanced Facial Recognition
Apart from the top-notch, the OnePlus 6 is rumoured to share one other key feature with the iPhone X. Recent reports have indicated the OnePlus 6 will come equipped with an advanced facial recognition that will be “as good as Apple’s FaceID”.
The OnePlus 5T already came with Face Unlock feature, but it only uses the camera sensor making it easy to fool the security system. The OnePlus 6, on the other hand, will include a 3D camera module in addition to the front-facing camera. This will significantly make the OnePlus 6 facial recognition more secure than the Face Unlock feature on the 5T.
Display
It is not much known about the OnePlus 6 display at the moment, but it seems the Chinese company will go with the tried and tested Samsung made optic AMOLED panel. OnePlus is also expected to stick with its Full HD resolution display instead of going for the sharper Quad HD panel which is way more expensive. Still, OnePlus displays have been great, and it wouldn’t matter much if the company keeps the trend.
Performance
It has already been confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will be powered by the top-of-the-range Qualcomm SnapDragon 845 processor. Just like OnePlus 5T, the CPU will be paired with 8GB RAM and 6GB RAM options. In terms of software, the live images of the smartphone suggest OnePlus will be launching it with the Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box, with the OxygenOS overlay on top. With Qualcomm’s top processor coupled with near-stock Android, OnePlus 6 will definitely perform on par with other Android flagships.
Camera
The OnePlus 6 is expected to feature a dual-camera setup at the rear (like its predecessors) with an LED flash as per the leaked renders. Nothing is however known at this point about the key specifications of these two sensors. The OnePlus 5T came with 16MP + 20MP dual sensors on the rear and a 16MP selfie snapper. The cameras offer excellent performance even in low light conditions.
We expect the OnePlus 6 to come with even bigger and better cameras. OnePlus can also be expected to add AI features to enhance the photography.
Wireless Charging
The glass back on the OnePlus 6 hints that the phone could potentially come with wireless charging on deck. This is great news as Apple has embraced this technology and it is expected to go mainstream in upcoming Android smartphones.
