Looks like Idea Cellular is all set to launch its own 3G network in Kolkata ahead of the launch of its Vodafone 4G in December. Idea's 3G signal is now appearing in many places with constant signal throughout Kolkata.
We earlier reported that Idea Cellular may launch their own 3G network during Diwali. However, they haven't launched their 3G network yet or haven't made any official statement on this regard. We can see Idea's 3G signal in many parts in Kolkata, including DumDum, Sodepur, and Barrackpore. Those signals were alive for a few hours. However, during testing, we didn't succeed to log into 3G network from an Idea SIM.
With the 3G launch, Idea would be the 6th 3G network in Kolkata, leaving Tata DoCoMo as the only operator with a 2G network. Idea is deploying 3G network on 2100 MHz band unlike Airtel's 3G on 900 MHz band in Kolkata. However, we assume that Idea customers would also access Vodafone 3G under ICRA.
With its own 3G network, Idea could offer even cheaper data as it is already the operator is offering lowest rates when it comes to data rates. Many Idea customers are getting 1GB 3G at just Rs. 123 as a special offer while the company offering 1GB 2G data at just Rs. 58. Idea's 2G network is quite good, but it lacks 3G network.
The Whole the market is almost saturated, and Vodafone, Airtel, and Aircel are the three biggest player in terms of subscriber base. So, we can surely say that its own 3G network could help them grow in the market.
