Aircel is one of the only two operators offering services on 2G, 3G and 4G platforms in India. At the time of launch of commercial services Aircel gained its market share through its unique and value for money ‘Pocket internet’ offering, which is the name given to its 2G data services.
After Uninor, Aircel offers one of the lowest tariffs for 2G data in India. On the one hand where the incumbents are hiking their data pack tariffs, Aircel is trying to strengthen its position in the sector by slashing its 2G data tariffs. In Maharashtra circle it now offers 1GB 2G data for Rs.79 with 28 day validity, this was earlier available for Rs.98, It now offers 1.3GB 2G data for Rs.98 with 28 day validity, this was earlier available for Rs.128.
Aircel holds Pan India 2G spectrum but has scaled down its operations in 5 circles, it also holds 3G spectrum in 13 circles and 4G spectrum in 8 circles. It remains to be seen whether it will participate in the upcoming spectrum auction or will take the road of mergers and acquisition.
