The launch of the Xiaomi Mi 5 has long been due, and the company had been taking a lot of time to launch the successor to the Mi 4. If you can remember, the Mi 4 was announced back in July 2014, and it has been 18 months since the launch. Now, the Mi 5 launch date has been confirmed to be next month.
According to a Weibo post by Xiaomi co-founder and Senior VP, Liwan Jiang, the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be unveiled during the company's Spring Conference, which is set to be conducted on February 24, 2016. More details about the launch event will be unveiled by the company on January 24.
The Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to feature a 5.3-inch or a 5.5-inch QHD IPS LCD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM, 16/64GB of internal storage space, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow-based MIUI, a 16-megapixel camera with OIS and 4K video recording, an 8-megapixel secondary camera, a metal body, a fingerprint sensor, 4G LTE and USB Type-C connectivity, and a 3,030 mAh battery.
The Mi 5 will compete with the likes of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 (and Galaxy S7 edge), the LG G5, and the HTC One M10. All these devices will be unveiled sometime during February and March of this year, and we are expecting to see a touch fight for supremacy in the high-end smartphone segment in 2016.
