Airtel-funded Nyaya Bharti, a corporate initiative by Bharti Enterprises has provided legal assistance and facilitated the release of eight deserving undertrials on bail from the jails in Delhi –NCR, says a release from the company.
Began in 2015, Nyaya Bharti is a philanthropic project of Bharti Enterprises, designed to provide legal assistance for people who are charged with minor offenses. Nyaya Bharti helps undertrials by paying the bail and surety amounts. Also, in many cases, the lawyers from Nyaya Bharti have filed the bail applications and also represented the undertrials in various Courts.
The initiative focuses on the criminal cases initiated at District Courts and is funded by Bharti Airtel with an annual grant of Rs.10 Crore. It also has a voluntary contribution of Rs. 5 Crore from Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises.
Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Co-Chairman, Bharti Foundation, said, “With the release of the first set of underprivileged undertrials, we have made a beginning towards reaching out to and assisting the undertrials who are languishing in jails for minor offenses. We are fully committed to expanding the scope of the initiative and have been overwhelmed by the support this initiative has received from individuals and institutions from across the country.”
Nyaya Bharti is headed by a Governing Board led by Justice A.S. Anand (Retired Chief Justice of India). There is also a supportive panel comprising of lawyers to assist the same.
Although focuses in Delhi NCR region, the Enterprises plans to expand to other parts of North India soon. For expansion, Bharti Enterprises welcomes other corporate houses to become a part of the initiative.
