airtel experiments with high intensity data packsBharti Airtel has introduced a new short-term prepaid data pack in select circles, underlining a broader shift in mobile data consumption patterns across India. The move reflects growing demand for high-intensity data usage over shorter timeframes, driven by changing user behaviour and increasingly digital lifestyles.

Airtel’s prepaid data portfolio already spans a wide price range, starting from entry-level packs priced at Rs 22 and extending to higher-value add-ons costing up to Rs 361. These packs typically function as data top-ups and are designed to supplement an existing base recharge. The newly launched Rs 39 data pack stands out for its aggressive per-day data allocation despite its limited validity.

The Rs 39 Airtel data pack offers 3GB of high-speed data per day for a validity of three days, translating into a total of 9GB of data over the validity period. Once the daily high-speed quota is exhausted, users can continue to access data at a pay-as-you-go rate of 50 paise per MB. The structure ensures uninterrupted connectivity while nudging users to remain within the bundled data allowance.

Officially, Bharti Airtel has rolled out this pack in select telecom circles, including Uttar Pradesh East, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. However, the Rs 39 Airtel data pack, although openly available in select circles, is also being offered to select customers in other circles. Users can check the availability of the pack on their number via the Airtel Thanks app. Such targeted exposure beyond notified circles suggests a calibrated rollout strategy rather than a blanket national launch.

Users increasingly rely on mobile data for travel, temporary work-from-anywhere needs, live video consumption, gaming, hotspot usage, or as a backup when fixed broadband connectivity is unavailable. For these use cases, a high-data, short-validity add-on can be more practical than longer-duration packs with lower daily limits.

In comparison, Airtel also offers a Rs 33 data pack that provides 2GB of high-speed data with a validity of one day. While the Rs 33 pack caters to immediate, single-day data requirements, its value proposition is weaker when viewed alongside the Rs 39 option. For an additional Rs 6, users gain access to more than four times the total data spread over three days, provided they can utilise the extended validity.

Both data packs are add-on recharges and do not include service validity. They are available only to prepaid customers with an active outgoing validity on their base plan. Once the bundled data is consumed, the post-quota pricing remains consistent across packs at 50 paise per MB.

From an industry perspective, Airtel’s move highlights a growing emphasis on flexible, consumption-led pricing models. Rather than relying solely on long-term unlimited plans, telecom operators are increasingly experimenting with short-duration, high-intensity data packs that align closely with real-world usage patterns. Whether Airtel expands this pack to more circles is likely to depend on customer response and usage trends observed during this trial phase.
