Vodafone has announced roll out of 3G network in Kerala circle within next 3-6 months time. The company will use 2100Mhz 3G spectrum acquired in March 2015 auction.
Vodafone currently provides 3G data service in the circle through ICRA with Idea cellular. Idea Cellular and BSNL leads 3G data market with Docomo and Aircel 3G limited to only few cities. Recently Vodafone went to become the second largest operator in Kerala circle pushing BSNL to third position. Vodafone also hold 1800Mhz spectrum suitable for 4G, but plans to start 4G service once device eco-system evolves.
Comparison of 3G plan available in Kerala
AVoIds 3G plans are almost same and all three operator uses Idea 3G network through ICRA for 3G service. BSNL plans are cheaper than AVoIds, but after several hikes 1GB monthly plan cost Rs 198, just Rs 50 less than AVoIds offering. Docomo's plans are similar to BSNL, but 3G service is limited to few cities. Aircel came back to Kerala circle with lowest 3G tariff available in the country, but again both 2G and 3G service is currently available in two cities.
With own 3G network, Vodafone will be in a better position to compete with market leaders Idea and BSNL. At the same time Idea could free up its 3G network after Vodafone 3G subscribers move out. We expect the tariff to be same as current 3G tariff offered by Vodafone, but may introduce special offers to lure 3G customers to its network.
