The Department of Telecom has imposed a penalty on mobile operators, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Idea Cellular for not verifying the details of all their mobile subscribers. India's GSM mobile operators added 8.93 million subscribers to their networks in April-2009, taking total GSM subscribers to 297.7 million, according to data released by the Cellular Operators' Association of India.
