Islalink and Nokia have successfully tested Nokia's sixth-generation Photonic Service Engine (PSE-6s) over an unrepeated 330 km submarine cable connecting Crotone, Italy, with Preveza, Greece, setting a new capacity-reach record for 800 Gbps transmission on the IONIAN cable system.

IONIAN cable system
The IONIAN network, launched by Islalink, is a high-capacity submarine system offering a fiber route between Italy and Greece through the submarine link and two terrestrial rings. The network uses the C+L band (9.6 THz) to connect key cities in Italy (Milan and Rome) and Greece (Athens and Thessaloniki).
According to Nokia, a 1 Tbps capacity has also been tested on Greece's terrestrial routes: the 452 km southern route (Preveza to Athens) and the 975 km northern route (Preveza to Thessaloniki to Athens).

Nokia said its PSE-6s not only enhances network performance but also delivers a 60 percent reduction in network power consumption per bit, contributing to more sustainable operations. This technology is crucial for data center connectivity, benefitting global tech players and other high-demand users.
