AIRTEL GEARED UP TO UPGRADE MOBILE NETWORK IN NORTH EASTIndia's leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel has geared up to upgrade and enhance its GSM EDGE mobile service network in Assam and North East region.

Airtel today said that it will invest Rs 500 crore in GSM network up-gradation and another Rs 100 crore in associated activities in current fiscal year in the North East region. The company said that they aims to improve the network in Assam and North East telecom circle by investing in GSM Network rollout and up-gradation work. Airtel had spent a similar amount in last fiscal year in this region.




Airtel now aims to cover more highways of North East region, all the tourist hotspots and religious sites in Assam and North East telecom circle.

The company has invested close to Rs 1,800 crore since 2005 in the region.Airtel’s number of tower will increase by 700 in the current fiscal year. It has 3000 towers in the region at present.

According to Mr Sudipto Chowdhury, Bharti Airtel COO (Northeast and Assam circles)  that the company is planning to install around 700 towers this fiscal year in the circles. At present, airtel have 3000 towers in Northeast. The company also working for tieup with corporates like Oil India Ltd (OIL) and tea companies to provide data connectivity to them with its optical fibre data network. Airtel is investing in laying optical fibre in respective telecom circles.
