Qualcomm Technologies introduced the Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging technology in late 2016 along with Snapdragon 835 chipset, but support from phone makers is still poor. Even the latest Samsung flagship the Galaxy S9 uses the much older Quick Charge 2.0. The San Diego-based company lately updated the list of smartphones supporting their Quick Charge 4.0 technology. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of support for the feature, even though it has been here for more than a year now. The list of Quick Charge 4.0 enabled devices is in fact very, very short. According to Qualcomm’s website, the Razer Phone, the first dedicated gaming smartphone, is the only device to feature the latest fast charging technology. The smartphone was too launched a year ago and runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform.
Qualcomm, however, seems to have overlooked at least one compatible device, the ZTE Nubia Z17, for reasons unknown. The Chinese phone maker had confirmed that the phone indeed supports Quick Charge 4+ at its launch.
Of course, more devices are expected to be added to the list by the end of this year as the upcoming LG flagship the LG G7 is supposed to come out with Quick Charge 4.0 itself. It's unknown why brands are overlooking the QC4.0 standard, might be due to the cost-cutting program.
The Quick Charge 4.0 not only charges faster but is designed to be more efficient and run cooler than prior generations. Compared to Quick Charge 3.0, Quick Charge 4 is up to 20% faster, or 30% more efficient, while charging up to 5° C cooler as per Qualcomm website.
The Quick Charge 4.0 is engineered to charge a typical smartphone from zero to 50% of battery charge in just 15 minutes or less. Also, just 5 minutes of charge in a device can get up to 5 hours of talk time. The latest technology is also USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) compliant.
