Contradicting the announcement made on June 24, Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd now says that Freedom 251 phone will begin the delivery of 2 lakhs phones on July 6. According to Ringing Bells' Founder and CEO Mohit Goel, the company is trying to meet PM Narendra Modi for gaining support under Make in India initiative.
"We are planning to organise a launch event in the capital on July 7, a day after starting the delivery," Goel said. Goel did not offer any particular reason for this sudden change of date.
In the earlier announcement made, Goel had promised to open registration again for the phone after finishing the phase one of delivery. As per the current announcement, the manufacturer didn’t reveal anything about this offer.
Freedom 251 created much buzz during its launch for its price, and later created an equal uproar against many of its promises. The buzz provided Ringing Bells a whopping registration of seven crore before its payment gateway crashed within three days. In a conversation with IANS, Goel had said that the company is selling Freedom 251 for loss, approximately a loss of Rs. 140-Rs. 150 per handset. However, he also revealed that the company plans to sell huge volumes of handsets by which this loss will be compensated.
Considering the decent specifications offered by Freedom 251, several tech experts claimed that such a phone cannot be manufactured for below Rs. 2,000. To recap, Freedom 251 comes with 4-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. The memory of this dual-SIM phone is expandable up to 32GB. In terms of camera, Freedom 251 boasts of an 8MP rear camera and a 3.2MP front-facing camera. A 1800mAh battery completes the package. It runs on Android 5.1 (Lollipop).
