In probably a first occurrence in Indian telecom industry, the twitter handle @VodafoneIN was compromised this afternoon. The account was used to send unrelated tweets mentioning random users. The activity almost went unnoticed for around two hours and was fixed later.

Several tweeple noticed the tweets and poked fun at Vodafone!

Fortunately for Vodafone, the account was only used to send mentions and hence did not impact all the 1.9 lakh followers.

At the time of writing Vodafone India had taken control of the situation and had deleted all those tweets.

This also raises questions as to how exactly the account was compromised - did someone handling the twitter account give inadvertent permissions to some rogue app or was it some technical issue that led to all this.

What do you feel about this incident? How do you protect your twitter account?
