Vivo Smartphone With In-Display Fingerprint Scanner Expected to Launch in India on May 29

It was at Consumer Electronics Show 2018 when Vivo showcased its under-display fingerprint scanning technology, and now it seems their phone with the same tech is heading to India. Vivo launched its Vivo X21 and X21 UD smartphones in China earlier this year, followed by launches in few other South Asian markets. The company seems intent on bringing to India as they sent out media invites for a launch event scheduled on May 29. Vivo’s invite doesn’t explicitly mention Vivo U21 UD smartphone. Instead, it depicts a large “X” on a dark background along with May 29 launch date. The release date is apparently in line with previous reports about Vivo bringing its new smartphone in India towards the end of the month.

There’s, however, no information as to whether Vivo will bring the X21 UD or just the regular X21 for India. Notably, the Vivo X21 is one of the few smartphones to receive Google’s Android P beta update.

Of course, the biggest highlight of the Vivo X21 UD is the under-display fingerprint scanner. This means there is no physical home screen button or rear mounted sensor, and instead, users can touch the fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen itself to unlock the device. The sensor has been deployed in collaboration with U.S.-based human interface hardware developer, Synaptics.

The Vivo X21 UD features a 6.28-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. It comes with trendy notched display design and notch itself houses the selfie camera and IR fill light. This is essential for the 3D mapping of the face for the Face Wake 2.0 feature to work.

Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core mobile processor, Adreno 512 GPU paired along with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. In terms of optics, the X21 sports a rear dual camera system using a 12MP (f/1.8) + 5MP (f/2.4) module along with a LED flash. There’s another 12MP sensor up front for selfies and video calling.

The smartphone is fueled by 3200mAh battery along with fast charging support. On the software front, the dual-SIM smartphone X21 UD will run FunTouch OS 4.0 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. Connectivity options include4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB 2.0 with OTG support, and GPS.

Another X21i model got certified in China with Helio P60 SoC and a 24MP front camera. However, the X21 powered by regular Snapdragon 660 will be the one heading to India. Though the pricing details haven’t been revealed at this point, the smartphone is priced RMB 3,598 (approx. Rs 37000) in China.
