In a move aimed at empowering customers and battle the low-speed issue, the telecom regulator, Trai, is said to be working with telecom operators to figure out a way for customers to check their data speeds at no extra cost and share the findings with the regulator.

TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman RS Sharma told Financial Express that the authority would soon ask Indian telecom operators to create a URL which their users can use to check data speeds anytime.

He said that the move would encourage more consumers to come forward and share their data usage experience. Sharma said that the move is one of Trai’s efforts towards crowdsourcing of data usage experience.

The Trai already has the ‘MySpeed’ app, which allows subscribers to check the upload and download speed on their handsets. However, in this setup, customers incur data costs, which is considered a barrier for the regulator to get a clear view.

“The cost will be taken care of by Trai so that more and more people come forward for such crowd-sourcing initiatives. This data will be uploaded on Trai’s Analytics site so that all can analyse it,” Sharma was quoted as saying by the Financial Express.

Sharma said that the regulator wants to ensure that the data experience of the subscribers gets better and are constantly working in this direction. “We will soon ask the operators to create a URL through which subscribers can upload and download data to check speeds,” he said, adding that it is important that the experience is good for the consumer so that he or she is further encouraged to use data.

“Digital India should not just mean a connected India, but also a well-connected India where the data experience is one of the best in the world,” he noted.
