Reliance communication may soon kick off nationwide launch of Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) service. BSNL EVDOEVDO which is similar to 3G services so far is only provided by state run operator BSNL in few cities.

EVDO is similar to 3G service and its data speed could reach up to 2.4Mbps providing subscriber’s broadband kind of experience on the move.Comparing EVDO with GPRS or EDGE networks a subscriber actually gets speed 15 to 20 Kbps in a GPRS network and over 110 to 120 over an EDGE network.

But Cellular Operators Association has expressed concern to the Telecom ministry regarding Reliance move in launching EVDO service. In a letter written to telecom minister A.Raja the director general of COAI T.V.Ramachandran saidIf allowed the Evdo Services would be a gross violation of all principles of level playing field”.
The Cellular Operators Association of India wants the government to assure that unless 3G becomes available to all players no private operator should be allowed to launch EVDO which will lead to unfair competition for GSM players.
