At the recently concluded OnePlus 5T event, the Chinese upstart company hyped a lot about its in-house OxygenOS Android skin, which is found on recently released OnePlus smartphones. The company announced an Android 8.0 Oreo Open Beta program for OnePlus 5 and 5T at the same event, but it did not reveal anything about the stable update for its last year's smartphones, the OnePlus 3 and 3T.

For quite some time now, OnePlus is testing the Android Oreo update on OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones, and even allowed its users to test the software via the Open Beta program. OnePlus even admitted that the Open Beta program has been a successful one with more and more users engaging and testing the software. In a surprising aspect and out of nowhere, OnePlus had officially rolled the OxygenOS 5.0 update to both OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T based on Android 8.0 Oreo yesterday.

Nevertheless, the update, as per OnePlus is available only in limited regions because it's an 'incremental update.' But there's way to get the update right away wherever you're in the world. Follow the below procedure to update your OnePlus 3 and 3T to OxygenOS 5.0 in a single step.

Step 1: Download Opera VPN application from Google Play Store and connect it to Germany location.

Step 2: Now head over to updates section under the Settings app and check for the update again.

Step 3: Now, you'll receive an update of Android Oreo weighing around 1490MB. Disconnect the VPN and download the OTA update, and install the update on your OnePlus 3/3T.

Note: If you did not receive the update with Germany location, then change the location to Canada and try the procedure again.

OxygenOS 5.0 Features!

Now that you've followed the procedure, and waiting for the update to download, here are the new features added by OnePlus in the latest update on both OnePlus 3 and 3T.

First of all, this is the official changelog of the update from OnePlus forums:

System

  • Update to Android O (8.0)
  • Added Parallel Apps
  • Added Picture in Picture
  • Added Auto-fill
  • Added Smart text selection
  • New Quick Settings design
  • Updated security patch to September

Launcher

  • Added notification dots
  • New app folder design
  • Now able to upload photos directly to Shot on OnePlus

The first feature introduced by OnePlus is the Parallel Apps, which OnePlus talked about at the OnePlus 5T launch event. This new feature will allow creating two instances of an application that helps for dual-SIM users. For example, you can use two WhatsApp accounts in a single phone, thanks to the Parallel Apps feature.

And the next feature introduced by OnePlus is the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, which creates a floating window of select applications. This feature works similar to the YouTube PiP mode, wherein you can drag the video playing now to the bottom and browse other videos.

All the stock Android 8.0 Oreo features such as autofill, smart text selection, quick settings redesign, notification dots, etc. are present in the update. Sadly, OnePlus has included the September 2017 security patch fixes in the OxygenOS 5.0 update.
