The question is which smartphone will turn out to the better one when both these Motorola smartphones are compared against each other.

Design & Display

The Moto G5 integrates metal into its construction giving the phone a premium look and feel to it. With a removable back panel, the handset is overall well-built and comes with a front-facing fingerprint sensor. The G5 sports a 5-inch Full-HD IPS LCD display and moreover, its smaller size helps offer a sharper image than its sibling, the G5 Plus. The screen comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top for protection.

The Motorola Moto E4 Plus gets a slightly bigger 5.5-inch display but at HD resolution. On the design front, the Moto E4 Plus sports a metal body and has an obvious looking camera bump on the back. The fingerprint sensor is placed below the display, embedded into the home button same as the Moto G5. The metal body gives a premium yet a bulky feel to it.

Hardware

The Moto E4 Plus in India comes with a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core processor instead of the Snapdragon 427 chipset found in the international variant of the phone. Clocked at 1.3GHz, the SoC is paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage with the option of expandable memory up to 128GB via a dedicated microSD card slot.

The Moto G5 is one of the very few phones to house the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor along with 3GB of RAM. The internal memory capacity stands at 32GB with the added option of expanding the storage via a microSD card up to 128GB.

Software

As is customary for Moto devices, the G5 comes with a near stock Android experience for a budget smartphone, meanwhile, the Moto E4 Plus also offers a similar stock Android experience. The Moto G5 runs on Android Nougat 7.0 while the E4 Plus runs on the Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Both the smartphones offer a range of features such as the split-screen multitasking feature and customizable notifications panel, to name a few.

Camera

The Motorola Moto G5 offers a powerful camera interface with features like QR code reader, beauty tools, and auto exposure adjustment. The device flaunts a 13MP primary sensor with PDAF, LED flash, and auto HDR capture. There is a 5MP front-facing camera as well for shooting selfies and video calls.

As for the Moto E4 Plus, this device too comes with a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and autofocus. The camera supports 1080p video recording as well. A 5MP secondary camera sits on the front for selfies. The front camera also comes with a LED flash for better photography in low-light conditions.

Battery & Pricing

The Moto G5 is powered by a 2,800mAh removable Li-Po battery that offers all-day usage. Although it doesn’t come equipped with fast charging support, the battery delivers fairly well. However, the Moto E4 Plus takes the cake in the battery segment with its whopping 5,000mAh battery. Not only is the battery excellent, it also comes with fast charging support.

When it comes to the pricing of both smartphones, the Moto G5 has a price tag of Rs. 11,999 (although currently selling for Rs. 10,999 in Amazon India) while the Moto E4 Plus is priced at Rs. 9,999.

Conclusion

Both the Motorola devices look quite impressive for being budget devices in terms of their specs. Both handsets also share some common features. Having said that, the Moto E4 Plus comes on top - running on the latest Android version and with its bigger battery. However, the Moto G5 wins the race as far as the processor is concerned. If you're a power user and want a long-lasting device, go for the Moto E4 Plus, otherwise get the Moto G5.
