Moto X4, Moto Z2 Force and Six Other Motorola Smartphones Confirmed to Receive Android 9 Pie Update

Motorola has now confirmed that it will be updating eight smartphones under its Moto Z, Moto X and Moto G series to Android 9 Pie. The eight smartphones are Moto Z3, Moto Z3 Play, Moto Z2 Force, Moto Z2 Play, Moto G6 Plus, Moto G6, Moto G6 Play and Moto X4. All these smartphones were released in the last one year, and the earlier launched devices such as the Moto G5, G5 Plus, G5S Plus are completely left out which is underwhelming. Having said that, Motorola just issued the list of devices which will be upgraded to the latest iteration of Android, but it did not reveal when it will roll out the update though. Maybe the update will be rolled out to the users by the end of this year.

Eight Motorola Devices to Receive Android 9 Pie Update

On the whole, Motorola has listed Android 9 Pie update for eight devices, which include the smartphones launched in the last 14 months. The Moto Z2 Play is the oldest one in the list as it was announced back at the start of June 2018. The Moto Z2 Force is the second oldest device to the users in the United States, but in India, it was launched earlier this year.

The Moto X4 was unveiled at the IFA 2017 event. And then the Moto G6 series was launched this year, while the Moto Z3 and Z3 Play went official just a month ago.

No Android 9 Pie for Moto G5 and G5S Series

The Moto G5, G5 Plus, G5S and G5S Plus users must be feeling a bit disappointed at the moment as the company will not be rolling out Android 9 Pie update. This is underwhelming as the G5S and G5S Plus smartphones were launched exactly a year ago, whereas the G5 and G5 Plus devices were announced at the MWC 2017 event.

Motorola made the Moto G5, G5 Plus smartphones official at the MWC 2017 event alongside HMD Global which announced the Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 smartphones. Notably, the three Nokia smartphones will be receiving Android 9 Pie update by the end of 2018.

Still No Android Oreo Update for Moto G5S Series

Motorola is yet to roll out the promised Android Oreo update to the Moto G5S and G5S Plus smartphones. Even the Moto G4 Plus is yet to receive Oreo update. Probably, the delay of Android Oreo rollout has made the company omit these devices from the Android 9 Pie update list.

Motorola Has Been Off Radar in the Software Updates Department

Ever since the acquisition of Lenovo, Motorola is a different company altogether. The company has stopped rolling out regular software updates to its smartphones, which has led to poor sales in the last two quarters, at least in India. Interestingly, the recently launched Moto E5 and E5 Plus smartphones are not part of Android 9 Pie eligible smartphones list, which is quite surprising.

HMD Global is the New Motorola

It's worth saying that HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones took the place of Motorola in every aspect. HMD has been rolling out regular software updates to its smartphones; even the low-end Nokia 1 is receiving monthly security patch updates. Motorola used to be amongst the companies once up on a time which rolled out software updates on time to each of its smartphones, but slowly, that has faded away.
