Moto G5 Android 8.1 Oreo Update is Around the Corner

Motorola’s Moto G5 which was launched first in March 2017 is still stuck on Android Nougat, despite using a mostly stock Android build. This could, however, change soon. A Moto G5 was spotted on Geekbench benchmarking website with Android Oreo operating system. The listing shows a Motorola XT1670 device (model number for Moto G5) running on Android 8.1 Oreo. The company has decided to skip the Oreo 8.0 update altogether and jumped directly to Android 8.1 Oreo, the latest iteration of the Google’s popular mobile OS. This implies Motorola is perhaps testing the latest software and a wider roll-out of Android update is likely closer. No word yet on other smartphones of Moto G5 series but Oreo updates for the Moto G5 Plus, Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus can’t be far behind.

Interestingly though back in September last year, Motorola had confirmed a list of smartphones that would receive Android Oreo update. The Moto G5 was included in that list, however, no fixed timeline was communicated on the same. Not surprisingly, a number of Moto G5 users complained regarding the lack of Oreo update on consumer forums. It looks like the Lenovo owned brand has finally listened to the appeal of the consumers. The Moto G5 will indeed be receiving the latest Android 8.1 Oreo soon enough.

To recall, the Moto G5 features a 5-inch Full HD display with screen resolution of 1980 x 1080 pixels which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Under the hood, the handset is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM. There is also 16GB of onboard storage that can be expanded using a microSD card.

The Moto G5 sports a 13MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, 1.1-micron pixels and PDAF. On the front, there is a 5MP selfie shooter with wide angle lens, f/2.2 aperture and display flash. The device is fueled by 2800mAh battery with support for the 10W rapid charge.

Connectivity options include dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and micro USB port. The smartphone also houses a fingerprint scanner on the front which is embedded in its home button. The Moto G5 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, as of now.
