MediaTek unveils MT8127 SoC, a new quad-core processor for tablets

MediaTek has unveiled a new SoC, specifically for tablet devices. The MediaTek MT8172 is a quad-core processor with ARM Cortex A7 CPU cores and Mali-450MP4 GPU. This can be seen as an upgrade to MediaTek MT8125 which had similar CPU cores but a slower PowerVR 5XT GPU.

It can support cameras of up to 13 MP resolution and an ability to process full HD 1080p video recording as well as video playback. Thanks to its decently powerful GPU, it supports display resolutions of up to 1920 x 1080 pixels and ability to decode the latest HEVC (H.265) video standard. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi, MiraVision Display Mirroring (MediaTek's version of Miracast), Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, FM receiver and GPS.

Tablets featuring this new SoC are supposed to be released later this year. But I think that Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 410 will be more powerful than this chipset. Brands will prefer using the Snapdragon 410 in their upcoming smartphones and tablets if there is no substantial difference between Snapdragon 410 and MediaTek MT8127.
