After Apple accomplished the goal of getting more than half the iOS users on board its latest iOS 12, the company has now announced that it has managed to get as much as 60% of total iOS users around the globe running on its latest operating system. The new OS by Apple which was released back in September gained massive popularity thanks to the new features and improvements which it brought over the predecessor. iOS 12 offers new features like Memoji, Siri shortcuts combined with optimisations like 70% faster camera launch, 50% speedier keyboard appearance to please the users. The Cupertino giant also launched the first point update for the new OS last week only with the phones beginning to receive the iOS 12.1 update.

iOS 12 Gets a Boost After 2018 iPhone Line-up

The information surfaced after taking a look at the updated data on the App Store Distribution page which was collected on October 29. The data showed that 60% of the total iOS devices were running the new iOS, whereas 63 % of the new devices, i.e. which were introduced in the last four years like the iPhone 6 and later were running iOS 12. With more and more users migrating to the latest OS, there has been a decline of 29% in the number of users of iOS 11. This number is 30% for the users of devices launched in the last four years. It was only in last month that Apple had announced breaking the 50% mark for iOS 12 users on all iOS devices and 53% for the devices released in the last four years. The iOS 11 distribution also slumped to 39 % for all active iOS devices and down to 40% for all devices introduced during the previous four years.

Also, Apple released data which showed that 11% of all iOS devices and 7% of the devices released in the last four years are running on iOS 10 or less. The contributing factor to this phenomenon is primarily because of the stability of usage of these devices which are not receiving any more updates. Some of these devices include iPhone 5c and iPhone 5.

Android's Distribution Slower Than iOS

This success of the iOS 12 can also be contributed to the launch of the new iPhone XR which comes as the cheapest phone in the 2018 iPhone lineup and also boots iOS 12 out of the box. When compared to the latest Android 9 Pie, which was released even before iOS 12 in August, the OS seems not be doing well since it has not yet opened an account on Android Distribution Chart and runs on less than 0.1% of total Android devices. The Android 8.1 Oreo which was launched last year shares a percentage of 21.5% of total Android devices, whereas the other Android Nougat boasts of running on 28.2% of total devices.

The slower growth of Android is mostly because of the delayed pushing of updates by the OEMs to their respective phones. While the entire 2018 iPhone line up comes with the latest iOS, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the only Android phones among the thousands which boot the Android 9 Pie out of the box. To compete better with Android, Apple has also introduced features like Screen Time and Siri shortcuts on the iOS 12, along with improvements to Animoji for iPhone X users. Apple also recently pushed the iOS 12.1 update which lets 32 users simultaneously on FaceTime and also brings 70 emoji characters. The update also brings dual SIM support for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR users.
