Freedom Mobile Launches 5G Network, Covering Over 12 Million Canadians

Freedom Mobile, a Canadian wireless service provider and a wholly owned subsidiary of Videotron, part of Quebecor, announced an array of ultra-competitive wireless plans with national coverage and access to its new 5G network on July 27. According to the official release, Freedom Mobile has also announced its first-ever wireless plan offering covering Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Freedom Mobile 5G

As part of its expansion, Freedom Mobile announced the launch of its 5G mobile network services to over 12 million Canadians residing in major metropolitan areas such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton.

Additionally, select cities across Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta will also experience the benefits of 5G connectivity. The company plans to further extend 5G access to other markets in the future.

5G Plans and Access

To make 5G accessible to a broader customer base, Freedom Mobile said it now automatically includes 5G access in all plans priced at CAD 45 per month or more with Auto Pay, catering to both new and existing customers.

Moreover, to make 5G access even more affordable, Freedom Mobile is offering customers a Samsung Galaxy A14 5G phone with a 24-month term on a 5G plan at zero device cost while supplies last.

Extensive Nationwide Coverage and 5G Expansion

In addition to the 5G expansion, Freedom Mobile is enhancing its nationwide network coverage, allowing all new plans to include data that can be used anywhere in Canada without incurring any additional charges. The telco said this move aims to improve the user experience while providing greater connectivity to customers across the country.

As an added benefit, these new Nationwide plans qualify for Freedom Mobile's Price Freeze Promise, ensuring customers will not encounter any price increases during their plan term.

Seamless Roaming and Technical Enhancements

According to Freedom Mobile, their network has undergone significant technical improvements, including the implementation of seamless roaming. This enhancement greatly enhances the user experience, according to the telco.

Quebecor's Successful Post-Takeover Commitments

Quebecor also announced that it has surpassed its post-takeover obligations, including the early rollout of 5G, after the official launch. The commitments, made upon acquiring Freedom in April 2023, comprised providing 5G and non-5G plans with national roaming at a rate at least 20 percent below the 'benchmark plans' offered by the major Canadian telcos.

Quebecor aimed to achieve this target by April 2025, considering the reference plans of the three telcos as of February 10, 2023.

By combining 5G network expansion, nationwide coverage, and appealing device offers, Freedom Mobile is poised to attract a broader customer base and solidify its position as a major player in the Canadian wireless market.
