Beltelecom, the national telecommunications operator of Belarus, announced that it covered an additional 73,700 subscribers with its GPON network in the first half of this year. Of these, around 19,000 customers connected to the newly deployed networks, and 54,700 customers gained access to GPON technology through upgrades to the existing network. The GPON subscriber base grew by approximately 41,000, bringing the total number to around 3 million, Beltelecom said in a statement last week.

GPON Network Expansion and Subscriber Growth
The Belarusian telco noted that subscribers on multi-service networks reached 3.78 million, accounting for 95 percent of the fixed telecommunications services subscriber base. In a board meeting held on July 25, the operator reviewed the results of its work for the first six months of 2024.
"In the second half of the year, Beltelecom will focus on implementing the projects of the State Program 'Digital Development of Belarus' for 2021-2025, strengthening its positions in traditional and new markets, and increasing the availability of services, including in small settlements," Beltelecom said, emphasising that these areas will determine the company's future competitiveness.

Fiber Optic Network Expansion
The telco noted that in the first half of the year, 70 percent of its investment was directed toward projects under the State Program. Approximately 82.4 percent of settlements with a household population of 50 to 100 now have access to fiber optics. In total, nearly 2,700 km of fiber network were commissioned across the country during the reporting period.
Over 50 percent of Internet users, including those with service packages, currently choose speeds of 100 Mbps and higher. The average connection speed on the Beltelecom network using PON technology is 96.1 Mbps, according to the company.
