The word on the street is that the upcoming I/O conference by Google will have its attention focused towards the next version of Android which will come with the moniker Android M. There has been no confirmation from Google regarding it but seeing the track record, it is only fitting that the next iteration of Android breaks cover at the I/O conference and then becomes public later this year.

Android 5.1 Lollipop Update For Android One Smartphones

Google's top gun, Hiroshi Lockheimer, Android’s Vice President of Engineering has just revealed in an interview that Android M will be made available for the masses later this year.

He said, “As we’ve grown as a platform, we realize that to some extent predictability is important for the whole industry: developers, manufacturers, operators, and consumers, frankly. So we’ve landed with sort of a yearly cadence of big releases, so, for instance, one year we release J, the next year we release K, and then the year after that L, and then this year we’ll launch M, and so you can predict what will happen next year.”

The statement not only confirms the word on the street, but also gives us an idea about what the future holds. We can expect that every year, the I/O conference will play host to the launch of the latest version of the operating system and the year end will see new hardware coupled with Android's newer iteration hitting the market.
