Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) recently commenced mock tests for intranet fiber TV (IFTV) and Sarvatra BSNL Wi-Fi in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The tests commenced on October 1, 2024, on the day of the company's 25th Formation day. These services will only be available for the FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) service subscribers of the telco.
For the unaware, BSNL's Sarvatra Wi-Fi technology was being tested in Kerala already. The state-run telco wants to leverage its existing fiber network to offer a seamless internet experience to its user.

BSNL broadband subscribers in the region can now register their devices using the link http://portal.bsnl.in/ftth/wifiroaming to access Wi-Fi while outside their homes/premises in the Wi-Fi zone of BSNL. In the Sarvatra BSNL Wi-Fi service, the data is deducted from the customer's Wi-Fi plan. It is basically Wi-Fi with better coverage.
With the Intranet fiber TV services, BSNL FTTH users with an Android TV can access more than 500 live TV channels on the go. This is BSNL's answer to the private telcos that are also offering entertainment benefits with their broadband plans. The concept of Sarvatra Wi-Fi is a great one as users won't need to rely on their mobile networks all the time, which are quite often unreliable for efficient communication. While 5G is basically free for Jio and Airtel customers and is also available widely now, this tech from BSNL still has plenty of positives.

BSNL has said that the data usage for IFTV is independent of the data offered in the broadband plan. BSNL is not charging any installation fee for new broadband connections until March 31, 2025. Interested users can book a new connection from the BSNL Self-Care app, BSNL website, or by reaching out to the nearest BSNL office.
