Ericsson and MediaTek Reach Record 565 Mbps Uplink Speed for 5G FWA

Ericsson and MediaTek have achieved a record-breaking uplink speed of 565 Mbps, offering improved performance and enhanced connectivity for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) users. The achievement builds on recent milestones and is a benchmarking development for Ericsson and chipset partner MediaTek, according to the official release.

Demo Configuration

The milestone was accomplished by leveraging the combined capabilities of Ericsson's uplink single user multiple input multiple output (SU-MIMO) and Uplink Carrier Aggregation software features, along with MediaTek's T830 CPE platform equipped with three transmit (3Tx) antennas. By combining a 2.1 GHz FDD (frequency division duplex) band and a 3.5 GHz TDD (time division duplex) band, the teams achieved this remarkable uplink speed.

Combined Technologies for Enhanced Uplink Speed

According to the statement, what sets this achievement apart is its specific focus on the FWA segment, which stands to benefit greatly from the combination of Uplink SU-MIMO and Uplink Carrier Aggregation.

These technologies, said to be operating in the widely deployed 5G spectrum known as Frequency Range 1 (FR1), provide significant advantages for FWA service providers. The larger form factor of FWA devices simplifies the placement of additional radio frequency components and allows for greater device output power, making it an attractive solution for FWA providers.

Focus on FWA Segment

Ericsson highlighted the positive impact of this latest solution on fixed wireless access subscribers, enabling higher upload speeds for data-intensive applications such as cloud gaming and extended reality.

MediaTek emphasized the significance of enhancing uplink performance for 5G FWA devices, stating that this technological breakthrough further solidifies the advantage of 5G customer premises equipment (CPE) over traditional line-based broadband services.

Uplink Performance Delivers User Experience

Ericsson said while the industry has traditionally focused on downlink-heavy applications, the uplink performance plays a crucial role in delivering a seamless user experience. Limited uplink capacity can lead to delays in accessing online content, affecting the overall FWA user experience. Therefore, it is crucial to develop solutions that optimize hardware and software systems, including integrated radio and antenna systems, baseband processors, and software algorithms.
