International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has defined 5G as a 20Gbps network and calls it IMT-2020, during a recent meeting held at San Diego, California. The Union has also determined to make the network available by 2020.
According to ITU, PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games to be held in 2018 will witness the first working demo of 5G. The distribution to public will be made available by 2019 end.
A network with 20Gbps implies that a user can download an Ultra High-Definition (UHD) movie in 10 seconds. This makes it four times the higher speed as speed tested by Ericsson during the development of 5G.
As far as the name IMT-2020 is concerned, ITU Radio Assembly meeting in Geneva will finalize it in October. 3G was named as IMT-2000 and 4G was called as IMT-Advanced.
