The much awaited world’s cheapest $35 android Tablet is finally launched in India dubbed as Aakash developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Rajasthan).
Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Human Resourced Development launched Aakash Tablet and it will be sold to students at the subsidized price of $35 (approx Rs.1720) to expand digital access across India.
Speaking on the launch of Tab, Minister Kapil Sibal announced that the “Aaksh Tablet” will initially be available in a pilot run of 1,00,000 units before being rolled out to millions of secondary students over the next few months. The tablets will be distributed state-wise and each state will get 3000 units in first phase. This device was also distributed among 500 children on the occasion.
Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo) the 7-inch tablet has a resistive multi touch screen and Conexant CPU with HD Video and accelerated graphics.
Manufactured by London (UK) based DataWind, branded as UBSLATE and renamed as the Aakash tablet weighs 350 grams and has 256 MB of RAM and 32 GB expandable memory slot and two USB ports. The tablet also has support for Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g connectivity and includes a microphone and stereo earphones. It comes with one year replacement warranty.
Apart from WiFi connectivity the device includes support for optional 2G/3G USB modems. Two full-sized USB ports are integrated into the unit allowing pen-drives, external keyboards, web-cams, dongles and other inexpensive peripherals to be attached. “Pen drives are a common medium for storing and sharing content in India. They are even used by people that are not computer savvy, for access to music and videos. A full sized USB ports allowing regular pen-drives to be plugged-in is also available as an added advantage over other Tablets.
A key accessory offered with the Aakash tablet by DataWind, is the Leather Keyboard Case. The leather case not only protects the device, but has an integrated keyboard case allowing fast typing and conversion of the device as a small notebook.
A keyboard portfolio leather case for the Aakash Tablet will be made available during the premium version launch at an additional cost of Rs 300 by November 2011.

Minister for HRD, Communications and IT, Mr. Kapil Sibal launching the "Aakash" Low Cost Android Tablet
According to DataWind, the premium version of Aakash Tablet inbuilt cellular modem (GSM) or SIM card slot which will be absent in the $35 (Rs.1720) device, supplied to the Government of India and it will be available at retail stores across India at MRP of Rs. 2999 by the end of October 2011 or November first week. jeen October 6, 2011 at 7:31 pm
Iwant to buy a kabil sibal’s ” Aakash ” Android Tablet.
MyTelecomIdeas October 6, 2011 at 7:27 pm
I sincerely request Mr. Kapil Sibal to use this tablet for his works and give his feedback,Rather than just releasing and forgetting. Now a days even students just for education purpose need some masic requirements which this lacks.
A good intention in a very misery way .
MyTelecomIdeas October 6, 2011 at 7:26 pm
Even a Nokia E61 Have 600Mhz processor. This how come this 366 Mhz processor handle even pdf of 15 mb flawlessly without struggling, also its battery life is 3 hrs, do you always use a charger to use this? Now a days with the changing digital media 1ghz is the min requirement for any app to work flawlessly.
MyTelecomIdeas October 6, 2011 at 7:17 pm
Hold your breathes people/readers. This tablet will not bring much hype even just for e book reading. Just a hope to switch on and off.. Don’t over estimate this piece.

In all this tablet is a good piece, I understand it has Open Office preloaded
manish October 5, 2011 at 5:54 pm
@dhruv
resistive touch screen is not for good graphics, for kids i think its fine.
chenna October 5, 2011 at 5:50 pm
when and where it will be available..??
dhruv October 5, 2011 at 5:47 pm
they saved many bucks on screen also, as its a resistive touch screen. it will ruins all android experiance. but in less then 2K, its very good. hope they actually reaches students also
otherwise S.Kalmadi will take all PADs and sell to US and UK for 1$, rest is in switzerland
Amar October 5, 2011 at 5:44 pm
Not at all bad specs for the price. Dirt Cheap and a nice move by the govt……
sayan October 5, 2011 at 5:33 pm
good move.. It will be sold like a hotcake
Kiran.h October 5, 2011 at 5:16 pm
Firstly a heartly congratulations to the makers for offerning a tablet @ such a low price. it is ideal for students to carry out day to activities but not appropriate for heavy usage since it has got very very low processor and RAM. but one cannot expect it to deliver performace like OLIVE PAD or Some ZTE/HUAWEI TABS since its priced @ just 1800rs
archan October 5, 2011 at 5:11 pm
govt. of india took a nice decision by giving this tablets to students they are very useful in reading and for searching the content in internet and easier to carry 100′s of books in a single hand.
sandeep October 5, 2011 at 5:03 pm

steve October 5, 2011 at 4:43 pm
366mhz processor will be dam slow it should have been atleast 600mhz
Husain October 5, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Kanaga Deepan N October 5, 2011 at 4:17 pm
Resistive screen with multi-touch capability????
Ashish October 5, 2011 at 4:16 pm
cooooooooool
PD October 5, 2011 at 4:16 pm
Its use by secondary students for educational purpose will be limited. But premium version could be of much use for all especially with its extra connectivity options. In this perspective it would be better to wait till October 2011 (???. In any case it is a good initiative !
hardeep October 5, 2011 at 3:59 pm
seems a cool offering!
