The much awaited world’s cheapest $35 android Tablet is finally launched in India dubbed as Aakash developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Rajasthan).
Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Human Resourced Development launched Aakash Tablet and it will be sold to students at the subsidized price of $35 (approx Rs.1720) to expand digital access across India.
Speaking on the launch of Tab, Minister Kapil Sibal announced that the “Aaksh Tablet” will initially be available in a pilot run of 1,00,000 units before being rolled out to millions of secondary students over the next few months. The tablets will be distributed state-wise and each state will get 3000 units in first phase. This device was also distributed among 500 children on the occasion.
Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo) the 7-inch tablet has a resistive multi touch screen and Conexant CPU with HD Video and accelerated graphics.
Manufactured by London (UK) based DataWind, branded as UBSLATE and renamed as the Aakash tablet weighs 350 grams and has 256 MB of RAM and 32 GB expandable memory slot and two USB ports. The tablet also has support for Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g connectivity and includes a microphone and stereo earphones. It comes with one year replacement warranty.
Apart from WiFi connectivity the device includes support for optional 2G/3G USB modems. Two full-sized USB ports are integrated into the unit allowing pen-drives, external keyboards, web-cams, dongles and other inexpensive peripherals to be attached. “Pen drives are a common medium for storing and sharing content in India. They are even used by people that are not computer savvy, for access to music and videos. A full sized USB ports allowing regular pen-drives to be plugged-in is also available as an added advantage over other Tablets.
A key accessory offered with the Aakash tablet by DataWind, is the Leather Keyboard Case. The leather case not only protects the device, but has an integrated keyboard case allowing fast typing and conversion of the device as a small notebook.
A keyboard portfolio leather case for the Aakash Tablet will be made available during the premium version launch at an additional cost of Rs 300 by November 2011.

Indeed it’s a great chance for the students to be more advance from secondary level. but still u hav to wait for getting the result..
crazy people if you can’t wait for this stupid tab go and beg from kapil sibal which he has………
Iwant to buy a kabil sibal’s ” Aakash ” Android Tablet.
I sincerely request Mr. Kapil Sibal to use this tablet for his works and give his feedback,Rather than just releasing and forgetting. Now a days even students just for education purpose need some masic requirements which this lacks.
A good intention in a very misery way .
Even a Nokia E61 Have 600Mhz processor. This how come this 366 Mhz processor handle even pdf of 15 mb flawlessly without struggling, also its battery life is 3 hrs, do you always use a charger to use this? Now a days with the changing digital media 1ghz is the min requirement for any app to work flawlessly.
Hold your breathes people/readers. This tablet will not bring much hype even just for e book reading. Just a hope to switch on and off.. Don’t over estimate this piece.

Why do ppl just go around hardware specs?? It is a tablet ment for studies and not for all the extra curricular activity we have in our mobile phone. I think its a good edu-tab but a wrong person to launch the tablet.

This tablet pc is amassing. But it have resistive touch screen. It may have capasitive touch screen. Some budget is also increasing but it ok….and please upgrade it’s touch screen and also processor upto minimum 600Hz…… Sorry for bad English……
good move
helpful for the student who can’t pay for branded tablets
Nice device to try how tablet pc. We can try this n can buy other branded tablets for our personal use. Great thing for students at 2k.
Susanta: this has been made wid a purpose not for entertainment
Where to buy it?
Its good for who has nt enough money to use touchpad. Thats y I thanks to whole team who were did a great fabulus job. But I hav to must say due to low PROCESSOR nd RAM slightly hard to watch HD movie nd playing games. At the end story WE ARE NOT THE 3RD WORLD.
It this will be Available for Student under postgraduate?
Where to buy?
Thanks TT for sharing this
I have watched the coverage at least 3 times today on CNN [US channel]
But our Indian channels [all popular National news channels] are busy covering political happenings all through the day
In all this tablet is a good piece, I understand it has Open Office preloaded
@dhruv
resistive touch screen is not for good graphics, for kids i think its fine.
when and where it will be available..??
they saved many bucks on screen also, as its a resistive touch screen. it will ruins all android experiance. but in less then 2K, its very good. hope they actually reaches students also

otherwise S.Kalmadi will take all PADs and sell to US and UK for 1$, rest is in switzerland
Not at all bad specs for the price. Dirt Cheap and a nice move by the govt……
good move.. It will be sold like a hotcake
Firstly a heartly congratulations to the makers for offerning a tablet @ such a low price. it is ideal for students to carry out day to activities but not appropriate for heavy usage since it has got very very low processor and RAM. but one cannot expect it to deliver performace like OLIVE PAD or Some ZTE/HUAWEI TABS since its priced @ just 1800rs
govt. of india took a nice decision by giving this tablets to students they are very useful in reading and for searching the content in internet and easier to carry 100’s of books in a single hand.
wowww
366mhz processor will be dam slow it should have been atleast 600mhz
Oh thats cool!
But resistive touchscreen is little disappointing feature…
Resistive screen with multi-touch capability????
cooooooooool
Its use by secondary students for educational purpose will be limited. But premium version could be of much use for all especially with its extra connectivity options. In this perspective it would be better to wait till October 2011 (???. In any case it is a good initiative !
seems a cool offering!
