Vodafone Starts Offering 3G at 2G Price, for Selected Subscribers 1GB 3G data for Rs 126

After Reliance and BSNL slashed the 3G tariff to a new level, beginning a new tariff war ( though on data front) the biggies can not sit idle. Airtel has already offered limited period 3G data plan – 1GB for Rs 124, as a one time recharge for a mobile number.

This time Vodafone reacted the same way, but they are targeting few handful of customers across Vodafone’s nine 3G circles. Similar to Airtel, the offer is one time only – get 1GB data at high speed for Rs 126.

Vodafone-India-1GB-3G-Rs126

What I feel, Vodafone and Airtel are checking out customers’ reaction and their acceptability on such 3G at 2G price. Unified data plans are the future, and the new 3G plans from Reliance and BSNL are in the right direction.

Thanks for our readers and tipsters who informed us about this.

  • Prabin October 9, 2013 10:07 am

The world is moving towards 4G… But unfortunately, out network providers are unable to provide 3G at affordable rates… forget about 4G. This could be one of the typical examples how much we are behind in telecommunication’s technology…

    • Saurabh October 9, 2013 3:45 pm

@Prabin, Stop blaming companies. We are not behind because of them but ourselves because we are unable to pay for services and always look for dirt cheap prices. You tell me where in the world operators are providing 3G/4G at affordable rates? If I put in front of you the data tariffs of even developing countries, they are costlier than India. 1GB Mobile Internet data on an average is costing Rs.600 out there in the world.

You tell me, why would they provide a service at cheap cost when it is costing them high. Can you provide a thing for Rs.100 which costs you Rs.150. No, you can’t. Actually we, in India don’t look at Internet as a necessity and that’s the reason people here find it difficult to spend on it especially the non-earning people like students who rely on their pocket money and don’t have enough budget to spend on Internet. As per companies a student don’t require more than a GB per month and at Rs.125 or 155, it is still cheap. But here students do everything except using it for study purposes. Mobile Internet is for mobiles only but we find usage low because we use in on PC too. It’s difficult to use even 1GB if it is used on mobile only barring video streaming. You can go for wired Internet at Rs.500/month with unlimited data @512Kbps speed.

Some says 1GB of data costs companies Rs.10 only wand they give it at 10-15 times but why people don’t consider the cost companies are spending on infrastructures. Can you use 1GB without infrastructure? So each and every cost is added.

Yes, we are advancing in technology but we (people) don’t have enough budget for it as it is not a necessity that is important one. For us Home, Food and Clothing scores more. We can have food in restaurants for Rs.1000 in a day and twice or thrice in a month but we can’t spend 300-500 on Internet. We can ride our cars or motorcycles without any work and just for fun sometimes but can’t save it and spend it on Internet. So overall mentality needs to be changed than the tariffs itself. If we are ready to pay, operators will provide us quality services otherwise cheap services will be like wasting money as there will be no quality.

      • Ashish October 16, 2013 4:39 pm

You said “1 GB data cost an average of 600/month”. But don’t forget they are developed countries and their per capita income is more than us.

        • Saurabh October 21, 2013 1:19 pm

@Ashish, Do Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and many more falls in developed countries? I was talking about the world where both developed and developing counties are included. India is s till cheaper in terms of telecom services in the world even at Rs.300-2GB.

If they are earning more than us, they are paying more in terms of their currency. They are ready to pay for the quality and not like us who always run behind quantity even after knowing that we won’t be able to consume it due to quality. Bas quantity hi mangtey rehna 100 mein 2GB, 100 mein 3GB. Dekha nahi hai ki jab yeh quantity milti thi toh speed 5–8 hoti thi. Aaj kal kamm se kamm 25-30 toh hai… I seen many people who were not able to use 500MB in a month due to speed. Effectively they were wasting 100 for 500MB and that too with lot of pain they had to suffer because of quality.

          • Rizwan October 23, 2013 12:37 pm

@Saurbh: I thing you are very priviledge telecom employe with lot of free time. So much sympathy huhh !!

        @saurabh
Your point of view is good and excellent but there is some technical issue with it. Please look into deep in this technical details. I know some of them. In India quality of mobile communication is very much poor because our country has no quality control in this field. I dont blame to particular operator but in most of case mobile signal(Microwave radiation from BTS) fluctuate continuously or moderately with respect to time so that call(voice quality) degrades. When we travel faster like in a speedy bus or train then handshaking between cells is not successful at all and call get disconnected. In India handshaking between cells (between two BTS cell) done by assistance of mobile handset not by BTS(unlike other European country). Now come in internet connection . If you use 3G connection then at maximum place and in maximum time data connection toggle between EGPRS(E),GPRS(G),HSPDA(OR 3G) that result in disconnection of connection or slow connection. I have seen maximum of operator has same problem. They claim that they are giving 3G connection but believe my friend it is not 3G speed. It is substandard 3G.

I have recharged for 3G Net Pack of Vodafone. But every time I am getting 2G service, at the same I put another card it shows 3G service. What a Idea by Vodafone. Charges for 3G & giving service of 2G… Loot lo Customer ko…

    • Sakthivel October 9, 2013 10:07 pm

Hi Kailash, first u have to confirm the 3G coverage in ur area. After u have confirmed it, recharge with any 3G pack, u have to change the mode selection as “WCDMA only” or “GSM / WCDMA”. Use these procedures to get 3G.
Suppose if u are not getting 3G signal in ur mobile means, follow these steps
1)first select the WCDMA or GSM/CDMA mode,
2)and then remove the back cover of ur mobile,
      3) then remove the battery only from ur mobile for 10 minutes and then put it. (don’t remove the sim card)
      4)Then switch ON ur mobile
Then u get the 3G signal in ur device

Im Using Vodafone & I Got Best Experience While Using 3G Internet For Rs. 126 But Sad Thing Is That it is Only for 1 Time ,now i got addiction of 3G but it should be affordable i.e. 126/- vodafone should update this scheme & Make it permanant

  • rana September 13, 2013 9:26 am

Vodafone has cheated me. I recharged with 249 3g and 3g got activated as usual but this time something was unusual about the internet speed.. It is blazing fast with speeds upto 25 kbps and download time of 10 mb file took amazing 15 minutes wow.. Even vodafone customer care hung up when i requested them to speak in english.. Also the vodafone store guys were more involved in checking out my phone rather than resolving the issue… What an awesome service by vodafone

    • Prithvi September 13, 2013 11:33 am

It is important to check the coverage area of Vodafone. Is it strong in your area? I suggest you email them at the correct email address and also be brief. Vodafone has been very good in solving issues when you give the correct details. Try not to waste your time and theirs and you’ll get your problem solved. I am happy with Voda for this reason.

  • Saurabh September 9, 2013 11:41 pm

@SS, The confusion is over now as the Vodafone 3G signal that was showing with Aircel SIM on my rooftop is actually present. Vodafone SIM was not able to pick up as BTS is too far from my home at 3.23Kms. So while searching with Aircel SIM, it was showing the 3G sign as for a moment or two while searching it was picking and showing the same in network list as our phones are designed to show 3G even if signal is weak. Today I decided to move out and check whether I get signal at other places. So I finally found the BTS which is toward North-West direction of my home. At that place my Vodafone SIM easily picked it up and latched also without any 3G pack. No data pack is active on that number. The signal strength was -71dBm and at my home it picks for 5 seconds and strength is -109dBm with 1 bar only that stays for few seconds. This clarifies one thing that Vodafone will soon upgrade BTS near my home and other 2 also just like Idea. So finally after 3 years, they decided to come to my town. :)

    • SS September 10, 2013 8:52 am

      @Saurabh

Thanks a lot mate, you made me happy! At least iam going to see 3rd 3g operator in my home town in UP EAST. Currently in delhi so couldn’t check. I guess, the profit in data sector has encouraged Vodafone to start the expansion phase.

Now Aircel is only left to start 3G in my city but i don’t think so they would do it. Even iam feared that the next number in shutdown series ot aircel will be of UP EAST eventhough their plans are good.

      • Saurabh September 10, 2013 2:55 pm

@SS, There was a news article in ET on September 2, 2013 that Vodafone has awarded a contract worth Rs.1,340 crores to Nokia Solutions and Networks (Formerly Nokia Siemens Networks) for upgrade and expand 2G network across 19 circles and 3G network across 6 out of their 9 circles. I’m surprised that within 5-6 days of the news, I’ve Vodafone 3G signal in my town. So it’s a confirmed news that Vodafone is finally expanding.

        • SS September 10, 2013 9:12 pm

May i know tthe circle where 3g upgradation will take place???? Thnks in advance.

          • Saurabh September 10, 2013 10:48 pm

It’s not mentioned in the article but it is written that NSN is already managing Vodafone’s 2G/3G network in those 6 circles.

Actually Vodafone had given contract to NSN to start 3G services in 2010 for Tamil Nadu, Gujarat,
            Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh (East),
Rest of West Bengal and Haryana. So these are the 6 circles for which contract has been given for 3G network upgrade and expansion. :)

      • Arun September 10, 2013 7:49 pm

Vodafone didn’t cheat you. Read the full info about the plan before recharging. In that 3G plan, Vodafone promised to give 3G speeds upto 5GB and then throttles at 64 Kbps (Kilo Bits Per Second)- i.e:8KBPS after 5GB.

I have been using Vodafone for more than 4 years. It’s the best network and will never cheat.

      • Prithvi September 10, 2013 9:09 pm

I too have been using Vodafone – both for voice and data and so far never been cheated. Vodafone has been straight forward in dealing with their customers and I like that about Vodafone. Read the fine print properly before subscribing to the plans.

    • Saurabh September 9, 2013 11:47 pm

They’ve cheated you. They told you the truth that you’ll get speed upto 5GB which you did got. After that it’s capped to 64kbps and you can continue to surf without paying extra charge. So where the hell they cheated you? Plan in itself is unlimited but there is a condition or restriction to speed after certain usage. Similarlly the 198-2GB 2G users keep on shouting that they get slow speed after 2GB. I mean when company clearly tells that speed will be 40kbps after 2GB or 5KBps, why are your over-reacting. If you really want unlimited 2G without speed restriction you can have 499/month plan.

    • SS September 10, 2013 3:44 pm

Take a look at T&C. Speed will be throttled to 60 kbps after usage.

I recharged it on 31 aug. 3gb data was over till 10 september and I couldnt bear on reduced speed of 64kbps… so recharged new 3G pack 251 on 12 september to get the speed back. I AM STILL GETTING 64 KBPS SPEED. I CALLED VODAFONE SERVICE AND THOSE GUYS HUNG UP THE PHONE AFTER LISTENING TO ISSUE. VODAFONE.. YOUR SERVICE SUCKS!!!

    “BAKWAS Plans”

    Docomo offers 750 MB 2G data + D2D Calls 1/6 second + D2D SMS free for 98/-
    With 30 days validity.

If these Multinational Brands have courage then reduce the Plan price per month.
    Give 500 MB 2G or 3G for Rs.50/- a month?

If cost per month is not reduced then it is not tariff Cut at all :)

I dont know why there no PIL before Court of TRAI that unless cost paid by customer is “NOT” reduced the Telecom Companies can not advertise it as Price Slashed?

  • nik September 8, 2013 1:20 pm

In Gujarat,i am getting sms everyday regarding 3G 1gb data at rs.122 for 30 days….i activated this pack…getting speed of 7 mbps in night and around 3-5 mbps in the day time…i am using this pack in nokia asha 301.

  • Esmail September 8, 2013 12:37 pm

By the time AirTel Vodafone and Idea will finish testing consumer response to reduced 3G pricing by one time offers, half their subscribers will have ported out to Reliance :)

For those who have had the issue of getting only 512MB data on 3G pack of 123 in Reliance, I’ve heard that’s the strategy they are using to ensure that the offer is being used in Mobile phones only and not data cards, they credit your account with 512MB immediately on recharge with Rs.123, then check your usage for a period of 48 hours, if they are convinced that the data is being consumed in the mobile then they credit the remaining 512MB data after 48 hours. If they determine that the data is being consumed through a data card connected to a PC they will not credit the remaining 512MB.

    • s@M September 8, 2013 3:16 pm

      Nice strategy after all !!

  • SS September 8, 2013 10:58 am

    Why chori chori?
They can’t launch it officially or what? I bet if they do this, they are going to get lots of 3G customer.

    • Abhijit September 8, 2013 12:06 pm

I think the problem arises due to limited IP pool most of the times. Though, system may also be one of the reason failing to handle large no. of requests. I do remember while using BSNL broadband about 2 to3 years ago, I was facing same issue and the top official said me the same.

  • SS September 8, 2013 10:57 am

  • Saurabh September 8, 2013 8:59 am

    Ambala, Haryana

Nice. But it should be made a permanent offer like BSNL. Well, I noticed a strange thing in my town. While searching for network manually on my Aircel SIM, I found Vodafone 3G signal. I thought Vodafone has upgraded network and now we have two 3G operator i.e Idea and Vodafone (Airtel via Idea also). So I inserted Voda SIM in phone and searched but didn’t got 3G signal in UMTS mode. It shown Idea only. But when I search from my Aircel SIM card, it shows 3G along-with Vodafone name even when you search for 5 times. Same thing I noticed in past with BSNL. My Aircel SIM shows BSNL 3G signal while searching but when I insert BSNL SIM it shows 2G only i.e tower sign and no 3G sign in network list. The one that shows is from BSNL HP INA 051 or 404 051 but not from Haryana. On Aircel SIM it shows, two CellOne signals with 3G sign. Confusing………….

Btw Idea is also offering same kind of offer for specific customers who use data more or from which revenue is coming from data. Beside this Idea also starts Magic Recharge in Haryana after being launched in many other circles 6-10 months ago and the cost is Rs.65 and offering talk-time upto Rs.100. Assured is- Rs.54.85 which is normal. Beside this Idea has restarted 2G/3G Trial packs and this time it is costing Rs.25 for both 2G and 3G trial and you can have these 2 times.

Last time they gave 500 MB 2G for 7 days @ Rs.25 and 500 MB 3G for 7 days @Rs.49 under trials. This time 3G trial costs Rs.25 and offering 250 MB for 5 days. Under 2G trial, data is same at 500 MB for Rs.25 like before but validity is 5 days. :) Idea rocks!!!

    • SS September 8, 2013 11:05 am

      @Saurabh

That’s really very strange. If your phone shows Voda 3G signal then definately it would be present. Just like to let you know that you will not be able to access Vodafone 3G network unless you RC with a 3g data pack.
That also means that i will also have to test Vodafone 3g signals if i go back home in UP EAST. Maybe they have upgraded network.

Bro, I know that 3G network can’t be accessed with 2G profile but my friend who has 3G pack active as Voda offered him 2GB for 3 months with his handset is also not able to see 3G network and using it on 2G. When he inserted the SIM, he was in 3G area as from the city he bought his handset has Voda 3G but using it here on 2G network. Only searching with Aircel SIM showing 3G signal every time. I also inserted SIM in his handset and searched. It was same 3G shown along side Vodafone. Confusing me a lot. :D

I’m from Gujarat circle,I’ve already activated this 3G 126 INR vodafone’s special customer plan, Activate on 26th August 2013,But speed capped 384 kbps means when i connected on Data connection in android or data connecton they converted my handset in to only UMTS network so i can not get full 3g average speed 7.2mbps even in midnight.

What is there to test? Everyone will accept 3G at 2G rate. Before everyone ports out too Reliance and BSNL. AVoId better reduce 3G rates.

Why is Docomo sitting idle? They better do something.

Docomo is already providing offers like 3G data+TT on 250, 499 recharges. It’s good coz no need to topup. I am using Docomo and Idea where Docomo is being used for 3G and calling, Idea for incoming… it saves lot of money.
