Telenor May Exit From India If Spectrum Price is Kept High

The TRAI recommendation which proposed ten times higher value of spectrum is already slammed by operators, even GSMA opposes this move.

Telenor majority stake holder of uninor Tele-ventures says that they may exit from India if spectrum price is kept so high as per TRAI’s recommendation.

The company also says TRAI proposal for only 5mhz spectrum auction on 1800mhz band is nothing but create artificial scarcity of spectrum.

Telenor Group Executive Vice President Sigve Brekke cited “If these recommendations become policy, then the Government of India will be forcing Telenor Group to exit. It will be almost impossible for us to participate in the upcoming auctions.

And the company also cites Supreme Court’s ruling in February to cancel Uninor’s licences and the recent recommendation from Trai regarding the 2G licence re-auction, the uncertainty has increased significantly,as a precautionary measure, Telenor ASA has decided to write down the remaining fixed and intangible assets in India amounting to NOK 3.9 billion (NOK 2.6 billion after non-controlling interests).

As a reader whats your take on this move how its going to impact on common mobile phone users in India do share your views?

Uninor chole gele bacha jabe… Sala chor er company. After coming to India they just wanted to increase the no. of users by giving so called “Attractive plans”.. but they really have a very poor network coverage. They should have invested more money in providing a good network coverage..Network na thakle “cheapest ” plans diye ki hobe !! ogulo diye customer ra ki b** chirbe jodi thik moto call kortei na pare????

  • kaushik biswas May 3, 2012 11:37 am

Telenor-Uninor should keep their wisdom in the museum as of now. A mobile operator company which doesn’t have any postpaid plan in the first place, is talking about 2G? This company is like a roadside cheap country liquor shop; they’ve played a game by offering lucrative on-net and off-net cheap recharges only to gain a lot of subscribers and now talks about their exit plan. Damn irresponsible.

As seen again and again Govt. always plans to loot money by selling resources at exorbitant prices by stupid policies created by bunch of brainless people.
(Note: This comment is 100% related to recent developments in Telecom sector)

Good reply by Telenor to open eyes of Indian Govt.Ultimately Indian consumer will suffer due to A.Raja foolishness in distributing spectrum in India

  • Arghya Saha May 1, 2012 11:25 am

    wht abt MTS?

  • tarun dhwan May 1, 2012 11:20 am

future of telecom industry is not bright in india till existence of UPA govt and Trai.No Foreign players will enter in indian telecom industry due to high Re-auction price. Uninor should exit India to learn govt a lesson. No Foreign players or Foreign Investment should invest in india due to uncertainty of govt policy.

  • Kunal May 1, 2012 11:09 am

Knew tis is gonna happen…….bye uninor !!!

  • Tremerin Dsouza May 1, 2012 11:06 am

No doubt that what A.RAJA did was wrong by giving cheap licenses and accepting millions bribe but it has shown the benefit of cheap licenses to every indian as we have cheapest call rates in the world so govt must auction the spectrum at affordable if not cheap rate as it will help economic developmet of nation and provide cheap communications in rural areas and to lower segment of society

  • Pratul May 1, 2012 10:55 am

LOL, This foolish congress gobermint is looking to loot us indians and continue scamming whose bones scuttle out in headlines of morning dailies everyday. This is proved that the gobermint at delhi is most corrupt till date, be it in telecom, defence, land dealings or anything other.

  • Amit.G May 1, 2012 10:48 am

TRAI has lost its senses…. Nowhere in the world spectrum is sold at this rate & that too limited band. Why dont they think about long-term returns instead of short-term.

“They are killing the hen that laid Golden eggs for greed”

  • Jagannath May 1, 2012 10:46 am

Looks like the slow death of telecom industry has started…

  • Srinivas May 1, 2012 10:44 am

Its not fair for of TRAI to put such high prices for auction and changing them retrospectively, no one will ever come and invest in INDIA in future and Tariffs are bound to Raise

  • AP May 1, 2012 10:44 am

Telenor, Please, stop doing us a favour. We will try our best to make do without you and your generosity. Please go out of the country. We will completely understand.

An article in the Times Of India says that the Unitech CEO’s patience is wearing thin. Seriously? Should we tremble now? Instead of admitting its fault and paying for its mistakes, Telenor seems to be threatening the country with everything from international treaties to arbitration to whatever else they can think of.

The decision makers of the company need to get sacked for the Unitech deal but with all these histrionics, they seem to be trying to distract Telenor owners from the real issue.

  • Tippu May 1, 2012 10:38 am

Now a days Uninor is also following other major telecom tycoon policies. That means calls to CC Rs 0.5/3min, and call rates 1.2p/sec, Data speed also poor. Then what is the plus pint in taking uninor connection. So, no major difference after exit. Bye Bye uninor. But Trai should control the tarrif rates and also the spectrum rate should as like as 3G pricing

  • azam khan May 1, 2012 10:25 am

end of the cheap call rate

  • WiMAX May 1, 2012 10:23 am
